Run the pre-David pass on a scene. The brief is redacted/.claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read the whole file first and follow it exactly, including the Standing caution (a finding that removes a reason, an answer, an explanation or a qualification is wrong unless the thing is nonsense or does not fit; never propose an ending change on "cadence" grounds; where dialogue is compressed to code, the finding is elaborate, with the elaboration supplied) and the 2026-08-31 additions. Your report is advisory; the main session decides.

Then read, in full:

Read ONLY the files listed above. Do not open, search, glob or grep any other directory or file; do not use grep or find at all.

Context: scene 31 is the evening of Day 9 in the Ordish kitchen — supper, the pantry door's eleven entries copied by the greatest mage alive, and the questions that turn the evening; it must hand off cleanly to 32 (the neighbours' knock). redacted sentence: unpublished prose Check the redraft against each, and: Mattie's voice rules from her file (count her number-bearing tokens against Edwin's — she must carry fewer; no date+name in one utterance; no subordinate clauses in her dialogue — check "A figure from a thing that moves isn't a figure" and every line; the class-dismissal "Men laugh" — is it placed at the peak; the full-stop question — does she get one and only where the stake is); Edwin's teaching-paragraph budget (the green-hay explanation is his one composed paragraph — check the rest of his speeches; hunt portable closers, e.g. "A measurement that found nothing is a measurement" and "you are its only record, and the record is good" — the aphorism budget is one); Peri's lines (the sold-sheep question and "Then I've written sold, Milkmonth and nothing else" — her grammar, likeability, and whether pressing the sheep question is fair to a grieving refusal or needs softening); the narrator ("small and quiet as furniture", "her face closed like the door of a house", "and watched some of the fortnight go out of Mattie Ordish's shoulders" — figures: do they earn their places, count them); em-dash budget ~2/1000 (there is at least one, in "In this book" — he held it up — "that's called a survey"); every exchange understandable without the previous scene; viewpoint knowledge; counts (eleven entries; twenty years; four spits; nine weeks); the handoff to 32 (the knock and the good cups — 32 opens with the good cups already out before the knocking: check 31's last line doesn't contradict that).

Report per the skill's "How to report": findings only, quote + Part/bullet + one sentence why + replacement or "cut", Part 1 first; then the two closing lines about any device a second round would be about. Your final message is the report.

I'll start by reading the skill brief and the files.

Findings — scene 31, "The pantry door"

Part 1 — does this sentence make sense?

"and watched some of the fortnight go out of Mattie Ordish's shoulders when he did." — Part 1, pronoun/reference with no antecedent (and viewpoint knowledge). "The fortnight" is not established until line 41, twenty lines later, and Edwin has not yet been told about it; in paragraph 1 it refers to nothing the reader or the viewpoint has. It also pre-empts the later line, which is the scene's best inference. Replace: "and watched her shoulders come down a little when he did."

"served by a woman of about fifty with the reddened hands of somebody who works in water" — Part 1, the wrong noun for a real thing / reference. She was named and met on the page one scene earlier; introducing her as "a woman of about fifty" and only naming her three clauses later reads as a fresh introduction of a stranger. Replace: "served by Mattie Ordish, whose hands were the reddened hands of somebody who works in water, and eaten under her eye to see that it was eaten." (This also fixes "under her watching", which is a verbal noun doing an adjective's job.)

"The pantry door, on its inside face, carried the whole of it." — Part 1 (reference: the whole of what?) and Part 2 (banned family: "'the whole of it' continues to be a weird recurring phrase that you should avoid"). Replace: "The pantry door, on its inside face, carried the record."

redacted sentence: unpublished prose Replace: "and that was all she said about the fortnight."

"Between the chain figures sat the other kind of entry: … the day the hay went in; … the day the sheep came off." — Part 1, check every count and every fact. The hay went in in Weedmonth (the month of the second chain figure) and the sheep came off in Milkmonth, and the loft has held nine weeks, which puts today well past Weedmonth; the sheep entry is not between the two chain figures. Replace: "In among them sat the other kind of entry:".

redacted sentence: unpublished prose The door shows two chain figures (late Seedmonth, Weedmonth) with nine weeks since; monthly is what he is about to institute, not what she has done. redacted sentence: unpublished prose

redacted sentence: unpublished prose Replace: "It's a record, and it's the only one I know of, from its first season, and it's dated."

"and I'd like you to put your mark against my copy" — Part 3, literacy. This world writes everything down and she wrote the door; a mark is what someone who cannot write leaves. Replace: "and I'd like your name against my copy".

"the gate and the thorn stump and the water trough all marked" vs "The gatepost and the stump." — Part 1, the wrong noun. Canon's line runs SW gatepost to thorn stump. Replace: "the gatepost and the thorn stump and the water trough all marked".

redacted sentence: unpublished prose Replace: "the same rotation twenty years of her own, and her father's before that."

"And the hay off the ring came in green in Weedmonth," said Edwin, reading the entry — Part 1, viewpoint knowledge: the entry as described says only "the day the hay went in". Green is not on the door. Fix at source: make the door entry read "the day the hay went in green".

"four rough arcs" / "inside the arcs" / "the hay off the ring" — Part 1, wrong noun for a real thing; the scene uses two names for the same feature and never joins them, and ring arrives cold. Add to the diagram sentence: "…and four rough arcs across the middle of it, with the rings written against them in her hand."

"For the people listening who aren't farmers," said Edwin — Part 1, reference with no antecedent, and Part 4, a line the character could not say: the people in the pantry are Mattie, who is a farmer, and Peri. It reads as an address to the reader. Replace: "'You'll want this in the book,' said Edwin, without turning round, because Peri's pencil had stopped,".

"and Mattie looked at it longer than four words needed." — Part 1, count. sold, Milkmonth is two words. Replace: "longer than two words needed."

"Mattie looked at the door, and at his book, and wiped her hands down her apron" — Part 1, check who is holding what: she picked the lamp back up four lines earlier and does not put it down again. Replace: "Mattie looked at the door, and at his book, and set the lamp on the shelf and wiped her hands down her apron, although they were dry."

"asked her one question, the only one she asked all evening" — Part 1 / Part 5, redundancy: the two halves say the same thing. Replace: "asked her the only question she asked all evening:".

"You'd have asked, so I'm telling you first." (the replacement under review) — Part 1, a word doing a job it cannot do: the conditional perfect says she is telling him first instead of his asking, when what she means is that he was going to ask next. It reads stiff rather than pre-empting. Replace: "You were going to ask. So I'm saying it first."

"The kettle had not yet boiled when the first knock came at the door, and Mattie set out the good cups without looking to see who it was." — Part 1, contradicts the dependent line in 32 ("the good cups were out before the knocking started"), and "the door" is ambiguous in a scene about a door. Replace: "The kettle had not yet boiled when Mattie took the good cups down off the dresser and set them out on the table, and nobody had knocked yet."

Part 2 — the gesture at meaning

"small and quiet as furniture" — a figure whose two halves the reader cannot hold: furniture is not small and is not quiet, it is silent, and "small as furniture" is not true of any furniture. Replace: "who had been writing in the corner of the pantry all this while and had not said a word,".

"and her face closed like the door of a house" — a weak simile competing with the actual door the whole scene is about; a face closing like a door is the dead version and "of a house" does not rescue it. Replace with the chore, per her voice rule: "said Mattie, and put the lamp down and squared it on the shelf."

"The questions turned the evening" — the flat version is empty: the questions changed the evening in what direction? The clause after it is a real reason and should stay. Replace: "He asked his questions in the order of the door, not the order of his own wanting, because it was her record and she had made it in that order."

"A measurement that found nothing is a measurement." — a portable closer, and the second aphorism in the scene alongside "you are its only record, and the record is good"; Edwin's budget is one. It removes no reason: the sentence after it already carries the whole argument. Cut, leaving: "'These two are worth as much as the figures,' he said, while he wrote. 'Most people don't write down the days nothing happened, and then in a year nobody can say when the nothing stopped.'"

"A green stack is watched the way a sick beast is watched." — the most portable sentence in his one composed teaching paragraph, which rule 6c forbids as its ending; it is ornament, not mechanism, and the mechanism is complete without it. Cut, ending the paragraph on "and it takes the barn with it."

Part 4 — voice rules, countable

Mattie's number density is above Edwin's. Counted: ~10 number-bearing tokens in ~197 words of her dialogue (≈51/1,000) against ~10–11 in ~298 of his (≈35/1,000). Her file requires her to carry fewer. The concentration is in one line — "Both of them said fairy-rings, and one of them said it twice, and the second one laughed." — which is also the cumulative and-pile with a running count that rule 7b assigns to redacted. Replace: "The two men I asked said fairy-rings. One of them laughed." That brings her to ≈36/1,000 and removes the pile.

"A figure from a thing that moves isn't a figure." — Part 4, banned for her by name: an aphorism/antithesis, zero tolerance, and the register is Edwin's. Replace with an act on her own ground: "Nobody. They don't move. I took the first one off the redacted and then they laid the redacted."

"When the clover stopped I dug four spits" — finite subordinate clause, banned for her (rule 7e) and the only separator that survives against Peri. Replace: "The clover stopped and I dug four spits, different places, inside the arcs."

"and I'd sooner it caught," said Mattie, "because a fire I'd know what to do with." — same ban, and the because clause is the reason and must be kept. Re-punctuate, keeping the reason: "and I'd sooner it caught," said Mattie. "A fire I'd know what to do with."

"They were fat and fine and I sold them fat and fine, and I'll not talk about it tonight." — the doubled insistence inside a three-part and-pile; the doubling is redacted's. Keep the repetition, break the pile. Replace: "They'd grazed it four days. They were fat and fine and I sold them fat and fine. I'll not talk about it tonight."

The full-stop question is not spent anywhere in the scene, and the stake is the sheep. Her file says it is worth everything spent once at the peak. Add, after Peri shows her the page: "'Is that all that goes down.' / 'That's all,' said Peri." Then the kettle.

"The sheep. The entry says they came off in Milkmonth. Where did they go?" — Part 4 / VOICE.md "people say what they mean": Peri gives no reason for the question, and a reader cannot see why the sheep's destination matters. Supplying it inside the question also makes the ask fair rather than a poke at a grieving woman. Replace: "The sheep. The entry says they came off in Milkmonth, and they'd been grazing inside the arcs. Where did they go?"

Part 6 — weak where it should be strong

Em-dash budget. Four in ~1,050 words (≈3.8/1,000) against ~2/1,000. The pair to lose is the parenthesis in the interrogation paragraph, which is also the hardest sentence in the scene to parse (an aside dropped inside a "between X and Y" frame). Replace: "When had it started: somewhere between the twelfth of Seedmonth, when the priest blessed the field and the grass was good all over, and her first chaining at the month's end. She gave the date without being asked twice." That leaves the two in "In this book", which are within budget.

The device a second round would be about is Peri written as furniture — silent in a corner recording for a whole scene, then silent again through the first two-thirds of 32. redacted sentence: unpublished prose

To make it work rather than remove it, one of her two utterances here has to be her actual faculty and not a clerk's: she thinks out loud, so give her the working — the sheep question arriving in the wrong order and corrected mid-sentence, as a person reasoning at a room, not a copyist filling a line. Otherwise cut her from the pantry entirely and let her enter at the knock, so that 32's silence is a choice she makes in a full kitchen rather than her default.
