You are a canon/consistency lens for the novel at redacted. Read CLAUDE.md first and obey it; do not read notes/sealed/.

Your material: draft/book-01/scenes/08-what-youre-standing-in.md, read after scenes 01–07 in the same directory (Day 2, the end of the ten o'clock; this is the reserved first meeting of Sorrel and Peri).

Report FINDINGS ONLY — line quoted, canon file and line, what is wrong. No "clean" verdicts. Briefly and separately: canon the scene could use and does not. Do not edit. Do not commit. Your final message is the report.

Findings

1. The scene's designated owed beat — "most lives saved" via Peri — is missing.
draft/book-01/README.md ("Owed (2026-08-29)"): "you simply cannot have Edwin unbidden thinking the line about how many lives he has saved without Peri bringing it up first ... The fact can land later, only where Peri raises it — Widow Sepp's famine story at the ten o'clock is the plan's place." This scene (the Widow-Sepp-at-the-biscuit-tin famine beat) is explicitly named as "the plan's place" for that fact to land, Peri-initiated. In the draft, Peri gets as far as "A hunger year ... You mean a famine. An actual famine." (line 13) and the scene moves straight to Edwin's flat description of famine mechanics — nobody raises a figure, an "m-number," or "most lives saved" at all. The owed beat is simply absent, not merely reworded. (This is a plan/README fact, not a "must never appear" rule — the groundwork's specific phrasing, "a number with an m in it," is the thing ruled not-to-be-rescued, per the same note; the underlying beat is still owed and this is where it was slated.)

2. notes/canon/world/green-revolution.md still cites a beat this rewrite has cut, and the citation will go stale once this scene is accepted.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose You've been doing supply lines. redacted sentence: unpublished prose 002)."* The "decline the option of" clause refers to ch. redacted sentence: unpublished prose You've made it run to ten past." There is no "declining the option" beat anywhere in scene 08. Not a scene defect (redacted looks deliberate and correct), but the green-revolution.md citation is now describing a beat that doesn't exist on the rewritten page and needs updating at backfill, not left as if still Established from ch. 002.

3. Minor, worth noting rather than fixing: the famine speech ("A wet Weedmonth would do it...") in this scene reads "A harvest three weeks short" where ch. 002/canon quotes "Harvest three weeks short would do it" (no article). Cosmetic; not a fact error, since nothing here is yet Established from this page.

Canon the scene could use and does not

redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose That's fine as a scene-scope choice, but if this scene is meant to carry the "most lives saved" payoff per the README's owed note, the ballads beat is the natural neighbour that made that payoff land in ch. 002 and is worth considering for the same slot.

No other consistency problems found against the sealed-adjacent, character, or institutional canon checked (Sorrel's gate lines, Widow Sepp's verbatim story, the class-runs-to-eleven line, Dob, and the literacy/oral-idiom rule are all clean against sorrel.md, minor.md, and institutions.md).
