    Part 7, "Edwin first" — "Starting with Peri rather than Edwin is completely the wrong choice." In the groundwork this was a mid-chapter section under an Edwin opening; as a standalone scene the book's first words here are her name.
    Replacement: He came down past the widow Crane's cottage at the bottom of his hill and Peri Millbrook was sitting on the wall with her notebook. He could have gone past with a nod. He stopped.

The device a second round would be about is Peri's closing speech: it is one uninterrupted 140-word verdict from the character whose canon voice is short unsubordinated units and a false start, and its three load-bearing moves — the map, the shrinking circle, the asking reversal — are all asserted inside it rather than drawn out of him, so Edwin has nothing to do but take it. Making it work means splitting it into an exchange he answers into (he supplies the six counties, or the coast floods, and she puts the year on it), which also fixes findings 3, 4 and 6 in one pass; removing it means cutting to "The letters work" off the map alone. On the theme check: the speech stays on the right side of the trap — she gives evidence of the narrowing and never names the mechanism, and nothing in it says he stopped asking himself anything.
