Run the pre-David pass on a scene. The brief is redacted/.claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read the whole file first and follow it exactly, including the Standing caution (a finding that removes a reason, an answer, an explanation or a qualification is wrong unless the thing is nonsense or does not fit; never propose an ending change on "cadence" grounds; where dialogue is compressed to code, the finding is elaborate, with the elaboration supplied) and the 2026-08-31 additions. Your report is advisory; the main session decides.

Then read, in full:

Read ONLY the files listed above. Do not open, search, glob or grep any other directory or file; do not use grep or find at all.

Context: scene 36 is Day 10's evening — the working vs patient argument and the write-both ruling; the engine is her working and his patient in two columns, and a list that stops at six. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Confirm none of those shapes recur. Check hard: Peri's opening case — it is a composed speech with a list in it: does it break her ≤2-"and"s cap per speech, does "It's how a floor looks when it's been swept" count as an aphorism in her mouth (her file bans balanced antitheses and aphorisms; is the swept-floor line hers or should Edwin coin nothing and she keep it literal — decide and propose); "rings are a shape, and shapes get drawn" is antithesis-adjacent — check; Edwin's counter-speech and the ruling speech against his one-composed-paragraph licence (the scene has at least three long Edwin speeches — which becomes an exchange); his interrupted "call it what you like—" / "The working." / "—and a page for mine" — does the interruption device work; portable closers ("There's a difference between the two only on bad days", "that fact is worth every other fact in the book", "It's still where the answer will come from", "asking a busy man mid-task is how you get a no that's really about the task", "you see people the way I see ground" — count against the one-aphorism budget and propose which survive); Mattie's darning line and Tess's floor line (their files); the ending (Peri's recorded assignment and the narrator's "intended to exceed" clause — earned or winking?); em-dash budget (the interruption dashes count); counts (five and a half; three pages; one entry each); every exchange understandable without the previous scene; viewpoint knowledge.

Report per the skill's "How to report": findings only, quote + Part/bullet + one sentence why + replacement or "cut", Part 1 first; then the two closing lines about any device a second round would be about. Your final message is the report.

I'll start by reading the skill brief.

Pre-David pass — scene 36, "Write both"

redacted sentence: unpublished prose None of the three recur.

Part 1 — does it make sense

redacted sentence: unpublished prose She has four months of this knowledge off one man; the flat universal is a farmer's line. → "and every living thing in the ground is gone and there isn't one body left behind. I've never watched anything die and leave nothing."

"the birds won't fly over the one at Ranner's Sluice" — Part 1, reference with no antecedent and no source. Nothing in 34–35 establishes a second site, and no one has said who saw the birds; the reader cannot parse "the one at". → give it its source in the same clause: "the birds won't fly over the second one, at Ranner's Sluice — that's the carrier's word, not mine, and I've written it as his."

"I've thought so since the tower" — Part 1, callback word carrying the meaning (VOICE.md "People say what they mean"). → "I've thought so since the box came back nought in your study."

"'Twelfth entry says so,' and went on darning" — Part 1, count. Edwin's claim is that she was doing this before any of us came; the twelfth entry is the one made this morning with them there. The eleven are what prove him. Also Part 4 (mattie-ordish 3: a line of hers that opens on a figure is in the wrong mouth; her verbs take tools and ground). → "There's eleven on my door I put there with nobody asking," said Mattie, and went on with it. (Also fixes the darning/darning repetition; keep the beat, change the verb: "at the fire with her darning and Tess's head against her knee".)

"whatever you felt when I said no gradient" — Part 1, viewpoint knowledge inside dialogue: he asserts her interior. → "whatever it sounded like when I said there was no gradient in it."

"the working page had one entry, which was a question, and the patient page had one entry, which was a question" — Part 1, an explanation stopped halfway, and the exact failure VOICE.md names (a word standing where the meaning should be). The scene's engine is two questions and the reader is never told either. → put them on the page in her voice as she files: "Who? on the working page, and on the patient page What kills everything and takes the bodies?, and nothing else on either of them."

redacted sentence → "to learn whether it stops at the redacted. A mould has no reason to stop where one man's grass starts. A man would."

"the people who own the other field" — Part 1, unidentified referent; nothing in the scene or in 34–35 says whose the other field is. → name them, or "the Sluice people" plus one clause saying who they are.

"I'll ask anyway, at seven, in his own yard, before his day's work starts" — Part 3 (would this happen in a real world) and Part 1 (fact check). Sennet runs sheep; Tess milks at seven, which is already late. Seven is not before a grazier's day starts. → "I'll go down at first light and catch him at his own gate, before he's away up the field". Dependent edit: the closing note becomes SENNET, first light, say nothing.

"the argument began before the plates were quite away, because Peri had been holding it in since the ninth casting" — Part 1, mild: at the ninth casting she did speak (the boredom line). → "since the ninth casting, when she had said something else instead."

Part 2 — gesture at meaning

"which visibly unsettled her more than an argument would have" — the "than she would have expected" family, plus a narrator gloss on a counterfactual. → "Edwin sat with it and did not take it apart. Peri put the pencil down, and then picked it up again."

"I've argued honestly. There's a difference between the two only on bad days." — Part 2 and Part 1: "the two" has no stable antecedent, and the flat restatement contradicts itself (if they differ only on bad days, they are normally the same, which is not what he means). Portable closer. → "I've argued honestly. If that makes your case for you, then your case is better than I said it was."

"and shape is half of both our questions" — Part 2, an invented fraction doing the work of a mechanism. redacted sentence

"written even when the answer is the same, especially when the answer is the same" — Part 2 antimetabole, and Part 5 redundancy: scene 34 already has "a great many nothings, and I want every one of them written and dated", better. → "written every time, the same answer included."

"in the careful hand of somebody recording an assignment she intended to exceed" — Part 1 (viewpoint: he cannot read her intention off her handwriting) and Part 2 (a flash-forward that closes the scene like a bow — VOICE.md §2's resolving button). Not a cadence objection: the clause asserts a fact the viewpoint does not have. → "…at the foot of the day, underlined say nothing twice, and ruled the day off."

"and we'll know it when we see it precisely because we didn't cram the middle page's facts onto our own sides while we waited" — Part 6, the reason is right and the sentence doubles back; "precisely because" is a register slip. Keep the reason, plainify: "…that fact is worth every other fact in the book. And we'll only know it when it comes if the middle page is still honest, which means not moving things off it because we're tired of it."

Part 3 — the world

"a lawn fungus that draws fairy rings" — Part 3, figure from an institution the world hasn't got in that word; "lawn" is a maintained-sward, gardening-catalogue noun. (The fairy ring itself is good and worth keeping — it pays back the two men who told Mattie "fairy-rings".) → "a fungus in old grass that draws fairy rings a great deal rounder than these."

Part 4 — character

Peri's opening case, the "and" count. Seven "and"s across the speech ("and then you can take it apart"; "and rings are a shape"; "and shapes get drawn"; "and every living thing"; "and the question is who"; "and I've thought so"; "and today made me more sure"). redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence

"It sits in rings, and rings are a shape, and shapes get drawn." — Part 4: an anadiplosis ladder — the most rhetorically shaped sentence she has ever been given, and her file bans aphorism and balanced antithesis and says her best lines are literal. It is also generic present about the material world (7f). → "It sits in rings. Nothing puts a ring in a field. Somebody draws a ring." (Still hers, still the argument, no ladder.)

redacted sentence: unpublished prose → "and today didn't shake it. It's worse than it was."

"It's how a floor looks when it's been swept." — Part 4/Part 5, and a decision is owed. Ruling proposed: the image is right and the mouth is wrong. It is a coined figure and the best-turned line in the scene, and peri.md bans exactly that from her. Give her the literal report and let Edwin coin the phrase in his counter-speech, where the figure budget lives:

redacted sentence: unpublished prose → cut the announcement, start on "Somebody made this. Four things, and then you can take it apart."

Peri has no false start anywhere in the scene, and she is under pressure from the first line (making her whole case; being ruled indefinitely against it). peri.md 6a, countable: at least twice, performed and never announced, and no other dash in her dialogue. → e.g. "It started in a season, in a — it started in one field, in Seedmonth, between two dates we can point at."

Peri never fights the ruling. Part 4/Part 5, and the largest finding in the scene. redacted sentence: unpublished prose She should come back at it once, in her own grammar (a question slightly too big, then what she will do with the answer), and be answered:

"How long is 'maybe not this year'? Because you're asking me to write down that I don't know a thing I do know."
"I'm asking you to write it where it can be checked. That's not the same as unknowing it."
"That's twice tonight you've told me what my own page is for."
redacted sentence: unpublished prose

"You'll come to Sennet's with me and say nothing at all." — Part 4, VOICE.md §5a: orders to Peri happen on ground and are answered for. He does answer, but only when she asks. Given that he has spent the whole evening ruling her method, give the reason unbidden in the same speech and let her "Why?" go.

Part 5 — devices

Three long Edwin speeches, two of them recitations. Part 5, "a list delivered by one speaker is a device failing; rebuild it as an exchange" — the note he made about the four measurements in ch. 001. The scene has: the differential ("Diseases make sharp edges… Diseases come in rings… Diseases start in a season"), the middle-page list ("The rate fits both. The edge fits both. The nulls fit both. The moles fit both. The priest's word at the gate fits both."), and the five-item protocol. Two of the three should be broken:

redacted sentence: unpublished prose Fix as above by giving one limb away.

"Not tonight, not this month, maybe not this year." — same rule, second anaphora. → "We do not choose. Not tonight, and probably not this year."

redacted sentence redacted sentence I have three hundred years of studying and one afternoon of fighting, and the afternoon went badly."

Document beats: three. edwin.md 5 is rate-limited to two per scene, at most one with a document: the notebook taken/not-written-in/pushed back; the clean sheet pulled across; "He capped the ink." → keep "He capped the ink" (it closes the list) and one other; make the third non-documentary — the lamp, the fire, Tess's foot moved off his boot.

redacted sentence Proposed survivors:

Em-dashes: six ("sharp edges —", "come in rings —", "no averaging —", "count paces —", "call it what you like—", "—and a page for mine") in ~1,450 words, against a ~2/1,000 budget of about three. The interruption pair must survive (see below), so cut three of the other four: "sharp edges" and "come in rings" go with the exchange rebuild above; "no averaging — that's yours, Mattie" becomes a full stop.

The interruption device works. "call it what you like—" / "The working." / "—and a page for mine" has a plausible completion, resumes grammatically off "You'll head a page for your account… and a page for mine", and the interruption is the one moment Peri takes something for herself. Keep it exactly. Note only that edwin.md 6c retired the narrated interrupted-paragraph form ("he had the rest of it ready") until round 6 — this is the dramatised version, not that one, so it is clear.

Contamination check. "I hate the middle page already" is one word off peri.md's quoted groundwork line "I hate the middle column", and the scene's title and "Write both" are canon-quoted groundwork wording (VOICE.md §3.7: a canon-quoted line is a fact, never a line to reuse). → reword her line to something that is not the quoted one — "This page is going to be the whole book, isn't it. I'm keeping it and I hate it." — and run python3 tools/overlap_check.py scenes/36-write-both.md before this goes to him.

The device a second round would be about: the scene is three Edwin lectures with a stenographer in the room — his differential, his middle-page recitation, his five-item protocol — and Peri, whose evening this is, contributes one composed speech and then files. Even with every line above fixed, the second comment will be that she agrees to a year's suspension of her own case without once making him pay for it.

What it would take: rebuild the middle third as the filing itself — Peri reading the day out item by item and assigning pages, Edwin overruling one assignment, Mattie supplying one from her door — so the ruling is executed in dialogue instead of announced in a speech and then summarised; and give her one real push against "maybe not this year", answered on the page. Otherwise the scene keeps only the lecture and the device stays what it is.
