Run the pre-David pass on a scene. The brief is redacted/.claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read the whole file first and follow it exactly, including the Standing caution (a finding that removes a reason, an answer, an explanation or a qualification is wrong unless the thing is nonsense or does not fit; never propose an ending change on "cadence" grounds; where dialogue is compressed to code, the finding is elaborate, with the elaboration supplied) and the 2026-08-31 additions. Your report is advisory; the main session decides.

Then read, in full:

redacted sentence: unpublished prose The author's comment on the previous version of this slot: "nothing to write" was odd if there are things above it — not applicable here, but check any written-record lines for the same class of oddity. Check: the engine beats ("an errand that went easier than errands go", "already knowing the errand", "within an inch of the thickness Edwin would have named if anybody had asked him to name one", "something close to alarm" — do these stay on the right side of deniable, or does any narration wink at luck; "Edwin stood a moment looking at the poles... and then said thank you and nothing else" — is the beat readable without decoding, and does it stay unremarked as required); Edwin's teaching-paragraph budget (the I-omission speech, the char speech, the stake-design speech — count composed paragraphs, the design speech is long: "hear the whole of the design" is announce-y, check); portable closers ("The day it needs me is the day it's failed", "that is the whole of the qualification, and most people three times your age never sit it", "no motion in the work that was about anything except the work" — count against the one-aphorism budget); Tess's lines (schoolroom-direct per minor.md; "So I know how to be wrong in writing. That's the qualification, isn't it." — hers or too shaped?; "I can keep a day" — plain enough?); Peri's log entry (K, L, M: made and waiting. The edge they mark isn't ours to stand a stake in. — her grammar, and is "isn't ours" premature given Sennet's terms come next dawn — should it be "isn't ours yet"); viewpoint knowledge ("the brother-in-law met them at his gate already knowing the errand" — fine via the alehouse; "felled two winters back" — how does Edwin know, seasoned oak is readable: confirm plausible); counts (twelve stakes, first three badly last nine well, nine driven, three to the barn, twenty-odd yards, four foot six, hundred and twentieth pacing); em-dash budget; every exchange understandable without the previous scene.

Report per the skill's "How to report": findings only, quote + Part/bullet + one sentence why + replacement or "cut", Part 1 first; then the two closing lines about any device a second round would be about. Your final message is the report.

I'll start by reading the skill brief and the scene files.

Pre-David pass — scene 38, "Twelve stakes"

Part 1 — Does this sentence make sense?

"begun while Sennet's no was still fresh" — Part 1, dependents of every edit / check who was in the room and when. Scene 37 ends with Sennet at the Ordish gate at five the next morning giving his three terms, and Burl already cutting the redacted gap. A reader arriving at 38 has watched the no be reversed; "still fresh" reads as a contradiction of the scene immediately above, and it makes the rest of the scene's Sennet material (the barn three, Peri's entry) look like it has forgotten the yes. Replacement: drop the no and place the day — "The stakes were the same day's other work, begun while Burl's first turf was still off the line beyond the redacted, and they started with an errand that went easier than errands go."

"the edge they would have marked was on ground where no stake of Mattie's could stand" — Part 1, a claim whose support was just removed. Since Sennet has said yes, the reader needs the distinguishing fact, which the scene owns and does not say: his leave was for six spade holes, dug and turfed the same day, not for oak driven in and left ten years. Replacement: add the reason — "Sennet had given six holes, dug and turfed inside the morning. He had not given anybody leave to drive oak into his headland and leave it there for ten years, and nobody was going to ask him for that this week."

"K, L, M: made and waiting. The edge they mark isn't ours to stand a stake in." — Part 1, pronoun with no clear antecedent, plus Part 2. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The sentence is also shaped rather than literal, which peri.md forbids her ("her best lines are literal"), and it delivers a verdict on a permission that was granted the morning before. Replacement: "K, L, M: made and waiting. The edge they'd mark is on Mr Sennet's grass."

"two fixed things that would outlive everybody present — the gatepost or the thorn stump, the water trough or the ditch willow" — Part 1, a fact overstated into a falsehood. A water trough will not outlive Edwin, who has about a redacted; nor reliably a willow. Name the property actually wanted. Replacement: "two fixed things that were not going to move — the gatepost or the thorn stump, the water trough or the ditch willow, whichever pair the ground offered."

"She looked at her mother, and then back at Edwin" — Part 1, check who was in the room. Mattie is never put in the field: the party at the driving is Peri with the log, Burl with the maul, Edwin on his knees. Either place her — "Mattie had come out at the eighth stake and stood at the redacted end with her arms folded" — or cut the look and keep the poker turn.

"charred at the point before it's driven ... The char is why the point doesn't rot" — Part 1, a cause left out / an act asserted but never performed. The scene narrates cutting, lettering and driving in detail; the char is asserted of these stakes and never happens on the page, and the forge and the hot poker are right there. Add it to Tess's paragraph: "She charred the points in the forge fire first, twelve of them, turning each one until the wood went black and stopped smoking, and then heated the poker and burned into each stake a letter and the date, 25 Cornmonth, deep enough to be read through ten years of weather."

"waved away the sixpence with something close to alarm" — Part 1, check every number. A sixpence is Edwin's fee token, not the price of a dozen and more seasoned oak poles; as a purchase offer it is so far under the value that refusing it is not a gift and the alarm has nothing to be alarmed at. Replacement: "waved away the money before Edwin had got the purse the whole way out of his coat, with something close to alarm" — no figure.

"Edwin should walk up before milking" / "Nine of the twelve went in that evening" — Part 1, check the clock. Between the evening milking and the light going, the scene fits: two quarter-mile trips carrying a dozen oak poles, twelve stakes cut, twelve points charred, twelve letterings burned deep, and nine stakes driven with two chained offsets and a log entry apiece. It does not fit, and Tess milks till seven (minor.md), so she cannot be at the forge and in the field in that window. Replacement: make the errand an afternoon one — "and that Edwin should walk up after dinner" — and let the lettering be done by the time the milking is.

"So I know how to be wrong in writing." — Part 1, restate it flat and check the clauses agree. She did not write anything; her mother did. Flat, the claim is that she knows what it is like to have a wrong thing of hers written down and checked, which is not what the sentence says. See also the Part 4 finding on this speech.

"and no O either, for the same reason, if a series ever runs that long" — Part 1, check the count. O is the fourteenth letter of a series that skips I; this one is already at M after a single evening, with N owed. "If a series ever runs that long" is two stakes away, not a remote contingency. Replacement: cut the trailing conditional — "and no O either, for the same reason."

"the way he had bracketed it the day before" — Part 1, a reference the reader cannot parse, and VOICE.md's rule that every exchange is understandable without the previous scene. "Bracketed" is a callback word carrying the meaning on its own. Replacement: "finding the edge with his hands the way he had the day before, working in from live ground until the dead ground started under his fingers."

"at the ninth stake, poker in hand" / "when the ninth was down" — Part 1, odd line on a second reading. Two different ninths, twelve lines apart, in a scene whose whole business is counting. Replacement for the first: "at the ninth of them, poker in hand."

"I can keep a day." — Part 1, a word doing a job it cannot do. "Keep a day" is not an idiom the reader can land on first pass. Replacement: "I can keep to a day."

"within an inch of the thickness Edwin would have named if anybody had asked him to name one" — Part 1, odd qualification. He had named one, in his own list: oak, cut thick. The counterfactual is coy where the plain version is stronger and just as deniable. Replacement: "and within an inch of the thickness he would have specified."

Part 2 — The gesture at meaning

"so hear the whole of the design" and "that is the whole of the qualification" — the banned family, twice in one scene: "'the whole of it' continues to be a weird recurring phrase that you should avoid." The first is also announce-y — a speaker telling the room a speech is coming. Replacements: cut "so hear the whole of the design" entirely (the speech works from "is the part that matters more than the driving"); and "That," said Edwin, "is the qualification, and most people three times your age never sit it."

"with no motion in the work that was about anything except the work" — a sentence shaped like weight; flat, it says he worked steadily. It also spends narrator budget the scene needs elsewhere. Replacement: "inside the hour, and did not put the axe down once in it."

Part 3 — Would this exist in a real world?

"most people three times your age never sit it" — the ages rule. Three times fifteen is forty-five, which in this world is nobody's marker of long life or long practice. It survives if it is read as "grown men", but it is close to the fault. If it stays, it should not also be carrying the scene's closing weight; see the Part 5 note below.

Part 4 — Why would this character say this?

"So I know how to be wrong in writing. That's the qualification, isn't it." — Part 4, a line that comes from the plot's need and not the want, and Part 5, asserted, not shown. Tess coins the abstraction, names the term ("qualification") before Edwin has used it, and hands him his own verdict to echo. minor.md's Tess is schoolroom-direct and concrete ("It's a field. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Keep every reason in the speech — the stump, Seedmonth, her mother's note — and let her stay in the concrete: "I'll do it. I said the stump had moved, in Seedmonth, and it hadn't — it was the reading that was wrong, and I'd said it in front of Mother and two men. She wrote ask if stump moved in the book instead of laughing at me. I don't mind a wrong thing of mine being written down." Edwin then supplies "That is the qualification," which is his job and his register.

Edwin's composed teaching paragraphs: four. The I-omission speech, the char speech, the design speech, and "Somebody who'll do it on the day". edwin.md 6c allows one per scene, and Part 5's recitation that should be conversation applies to the design speech, which is the longest single block in the scene and is delivered at two people who say nothing during it. Do not shorten it — the content is the instrument and every clause of it is a reason. Break it into an exchange: give Tess "What does somebody actually do with it, then, every month?" after "A stake does two jobs," and give Peri the practical question that pulls out the not reached rule ("What do I write against a stake the edge hasn't got to?"). Same words, three mouths, and the budget is spent once.

Part 5 — Is the device working?

redacted sentence: unpublished prose It is Edwin's licence, it is the thesis of the instrument, and it earns its place; keep it. The other two portable closers ("the whole of the qualification…never sit it", "no motion in the work…") are handled above, and with those two plainer this one is inside budget.

What it would take: give her one of the design speech's questions and one thing of her own in the field — the obvious one is the question the instrument raises against her own page, whether a stake that never gets reached is a fact for the working page or the middle one. That costs three lines, it is her faculty rather than her job, and it keeps the scene's business exactly where it is.
