You are the editing subagent for the third draft of Book 1 of the novel at redacted. Read CLAUDE.md first and obey it. Do not read notes/sealed/.
Your brief is the skill at .claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read it in full and follow it exactly. Your material: draft/book-01/scenes/10-more-work-than-the-day-needed.md, read after scenes 01–09 in the same directory (they bind what is on the page). redacted sentence: unpublished prose Also chapters/003-the-improbability-engine.md — the groundwork this restages, which the author rates good.
Report findings only, per the skill's "How to report": quote, the Part and bullet failed, why in the skill's terms, and a concrete replacement or "cut". Then the two closing lines on any device a second round would be about. Do not edit. Do not commit. Your final message is the report.
I'll start by reading the required context.

— Part 1, "a paragraph starts somewhere the previous one did not leave it" / check the room. The study is the ledger room: scene 05 has Sorrel get "three steps into the study" and find "Edwin was at the ledger," with the correspondence shelves and sample trays in the same room. So he hears the tap in the study and goes up to the study. Ch. 003 avoided this by putting him in "the workroom"; the restaging renamed the room and broke the stairs.
Replacement: "He heard it as a small regular tapping over his head in the kitchen, and went up to find water coming through the study ceiling over the ledger desk" — and drop nothing else; the rest of the paragraph is already in the right room.
2. "He wrote to the Upper Wold council about their roots, and told them the fourteenth would be dry."
— Part 1, dependents of an edit; Part 4, knowledge and want. Scene 05 ends with Sorrel taking this exact job off him: "You'll decide it before you go up on the roof, and I'll write to whichever one you've disappointed. A council takes it better from me." Upper Wold is the disappointed council. As written the scene silently revokes her line two scenes later and nobody notices — which is the more damaging version, because the very next sentence does notice the identical encroachment on the salt-burn letter.
Replacement: make it the same admission: "He wrote to the Upper Wold council about their roots and told them the fourteenth would be dry, which was Sorrel's letter to write and she had said so." Then the salt-burn sentence lands as the second instance of a pattern instead of the first.

— Part 1, check every fact inside the scene. He is already at the kitchen table in the third sentence, so the roof driving him down to it at the end is not a move. In a 600-word scene both are in one eyeful.
Replacement: put the morning's work upstairs, where the ledger and the frost list are — "He worked through it at the ledger desk, parish by parish" — which also sets up the leak landing on that desk, and leaves the kitchen table as the displacement it is meant to be.
5. "the class heap, which had had the cantrip two days, smelled the way a heap should at two days"
— Part 2, the gesture at meaning / Part 6, weak where it should be strong. The flat restatement is "it smelled right," which is empty; and the sentence names its own interval twice to say nothing with it. Ch. 003's version was concrete and the author kept it: "smelled of a wood in Fallowmonth. That was right."
Replacement: "the class heap, two days on from the cantrip, smelled of a wood in Fallowmonth, which was right."
6. "He took the frost list back off Sorrel in the morning."
— Part 1, a transition with missing text; Part 7, openings are engines. Scene 09 closed on Day 2 at the dresser; this opens on an unmarked "the morning" with no statement that it is the next day and no statement of what the scene is for. The scene's own title carries the proposition — that he gave the day more work than it needed — and the prose has dropped it, so the first paragraph reads as errands rather than as a man displacing.
Replacement: restore the frame in one clause: "The morning after the parcel he got up early and gave the day more work than it needed. He took the frost list back off Sorrel."
The device a second round would be about is the coincidence itself: the leak's meaning rests entirely on one narrator sentence, "It had found the one square yard of the room that mattered," with no character noticing and no audit anywhere in the scene, so it currently reads as the author nudging rather than as evidence Edwin is refusing to weigh.
To make it work, the noticing has to come from inside the scene at Edwin's own resolution — one line in which he registers the square yard and files it as ordinary, in the register of the last two miles' audit in ch. 003 — or the narrator sentence goes and the leak is simply a leak until the audit scene collects it.
