1. The ford is not Edwin's alone to lose — this scene's stated "cost" contradicts established canon and the immediately preceding drafted scene.
Scene 20: "Marsh Barton and Upper Wold have a thing at the ford every Frostmonth that nobody can do but me, because I've done it for four generations of them and there's no writing it down, and if I'm forty miles off in Frostmonth it doesn't get done, and it's a small thing, and it's mine."
redacted sentence: unpublished prose 006)."* This is Established canon: the winter renegotiation is explicitly already handed to Sorrel. Scene 20 has Edwin arguing the opposite — that it "doesn't get done" without him and is uniquely "mine."
19-the-two-lists.md has Sorrel's take-over list already reading "frost list; the ford feud; classes, all; coast letters; the girl" — the ford feud is already on Sorrel's list, written down, before scene 20 happens. Edwin claiming in scene 20 that nobody but him can do it and it "doesn't get done" if he's away is stated after the point where the draft itself shows it already assigned to Sorrel.This is the spec's required "cost said flat, in the vale's units" beat, and as drafted it's the one clause in the scene that's factually wrong within the story's own established terms — a cost he doesn't actually incur, because it's already covered.
2. The want/cost is delivered as a paragraph, not "one sentence, said flat," as the spec requires.

The scene gives Edwin a four-sentence run ("If a man went east this week... The trouble is the ford.") followed by a full explanatory paragraph about Marsh Barton/Upper Wold. It's in the vale's units (good) but it is not the flat, single-sentence naming the spec calls for — it reads as an explained argument, closer to persuasion than to a stated fact.
3. The ending image reads as a resolve/turn, which the spec explicitly forbids.

Closing lines: "He stood up when she went, and the oilskin did not go back in the cupboard. He hung it over the settle by the door, where it would be in the way." No line is quotable as a decision, so the letter of the rule holds — but the image itself (leaving the prepared gear conspicuously out, "in the way") functions as exactly the turn the spec bans: it's a wordless answer to "is he going," staged as the last beat of the scene. It's the collapse-of-refusal payload moved from dialogue into blocking, which is the loophole the rule seems written to close.
4. "One other person who fails to notice" is only partly delivered.

Peri asks pointed follow-ups ("A week for what?", "You said the rings were getting bigger") and the scene closes with: "She looked at him with the face she used for things she was going to think about later, and closed the notebook on her pencil." That's not failing to notice — it's noticing and deferring. It's a defensible middle ground (she doesn't call it out on the page, and canon requires she hasn't been told he's going, which holds), but it isn't the clean "fails to notice what they are watching" the spec asks for; the narration explicitly tells the reader she clocked something.

Edwin's provisioning list to Peri ("Boots you've walked in. A second pair of stockings... Bread that keeps... A knife you can sharpen. Twine.") is a straightforward item-by-item enumeration, structurally identical in shape to Sorrel's list-taking in scene 19 ("sample boxes (6), the grey book..." / "frost list; the ford feud; classes, all...") and scene 21's handover proper. It's addressed to a different person and for a different purpose (her kit, not his duties), but the engine — a man itemising possessions/instructions at a table — is the same one flagged as already spent twice adjacent to this slot.
Canon the scene could use and doesn't:
