You have ONE question and you ask it of every sentence: does this sentence actually make sense? Method: restate each sentence flat in your own words. Report it if you cannot produce one flat restatement, or produce two and cannot choose, or the flat version is empty, or the flat version is false given what the scenes have established (counts, who said what, what is in the room, what a character could know, what follows from what). Check every number. Check every figure by what it literally compares. Check every line of dialogue by what the listener would take it to mean and whether that is what the speaker needs. Check every inference (X, so Y). Check every physical action against the room and the hands (who is standing, holding what, where the kettle is).
The author's standing complaint is that the drafter fills the shape a rule asks for without checking the fact under it; today's examples were "That's twice you've said farmer" (said once), "and noticed the third", "I wrote the laugh down", and a recognition asserted as if it followed. Be that reader.
Do NOT report style, voice, budgets or canon. Findings only, each with the quote, your flat restatement attempt, and why it fails. No list of clean parses. Do not edit. Do not commit. Your final message is the report.

1. Line 3 — "looking for the moment he should have seen, and there had been one."
Flat: there was a point at which he could have caught it in time. False by the scene's own account ten lines later: "there was no moment at which the thing was coming and had not yet arrived." If seeing it earlier bought him nothing, the regret has no object, and the sentence's whole force ("should have") is asserting a chance the draft then denies existed. Either the binding is stoppable-if-seen or the regret is not about a moment.
2. Line 3 — "he had taken it for a girl finding her nerve."
Flat: at that instant she looked to him like someone working herself up to something difficult. False given where scene 02 leaves her. Her last three speeches there are confident and winning — "That's four things agreeing," "That's four things I've brought you, and you want a fifth. Excuse me." She is not visibly short of nerve; she is running the conversation. The misreading he assigns himself is the one the moment does not offer.
3. Line 13 — "the loops... he had been looking at with a professional's mild pity."
Flat: he had regarded her fate magic with a professional's faint condescension. False by scene 02. What he read there "nearly made him scald himself"; the loops are "heavier stuff than the Seer's," and the conclusion is "there was a great deal of it, and she was at the very start." That is alarm plus caution, not pity. The pity is retro-fitted so that the reversal has something to reverse.
4. Line 13 — "there was no moment at which the thing was coming and had not yet arrived. It was a hand closing."
Two restatements, and they contradict each other. The first: it was instantaneous; no interval to react in. The figure: a hand closing — the one image whose entire content is a visible interval between open and shut, the thing you watch come. The figure is checked against nothing but its own menace; it disproves the sentence it illustrates.
5. Line 13 — "He was three hundred and fifty years old."
Number fails against 02. There he has "seen it twice in three hundred and fifty years" — a span of his own observing life — and has read people with mage-sight "for three hundred years," having turned two hundred at some point long enough ago to be a settled memory. If he is exactly 350, the fate-magic count starts at birth. 02's figures require him to be meaningfully older than 350, or that "in three hundred and fifty years" was itself loose. As written the two numbers are the same number doing two incompatible jobs.
6. Line 27 — "She said it as if reading it off a page, and she was."
Flat: she was reading it off a page. Then the sentence explains that she had read a pamphlet — i.e. she is reciting from memory, hands (line 23) flat on the table, no pamphlet in them. The "and she was" is a literal claim the same sentence withdraws. What is true is "she had", not "she was", and the joke is built on the false half.
7. Line 31 — "you have walked up my hill in week-old boots."
Flat: your boots are about a week old. He cannot know this and nothing establishes it. 01 gives him only "new enough to be a misery"; 02 gives four days of Weave answers plus map-work, and a coach journey. "Week-old" is a precision produced to make the sentence land, not from anything on the page — and it contradicts nothing only because nothing supports it. Compare line 49's "the new cloak," which is earned (fold-creases, 01).
8. Line 31 — "a frost list in the seed drawers that's thirty years of my handwriting."
The figure compares badly with what it is arguing. The claim under the speech is that a working life of enormous span is being tied to a "pending" line — three hundred years of the Pellings, three hundred years of teaching. Thirty years is the smallest number in the scene and shrinks the thing it is meant to weigh. Restated flat it says I have kept this particular list for under a tenth of the time I have been doing this.
9. Line 31 — "the ten parishes out that window" / Line 49 — "He watched her from the window."
Physical check against 01. The road's twenty-minute view of the climber belongs to the study window, upstairs; Edwin "went down" to answer the door and 02 puts them in the kitchen (kettle, hob, dresser, beam). Scene 03 never moves him back up, yet the kitchen window is given both the parish view and the full view of the first and second bends. One of the two rooms is wrong, or the kitchen needs the view established.
(01 has its own version of this — she "looked at the window, and at the man in it, and knocked on the door beside it," after which he "went down" — but that is 01's problem, not 03's; 03 inherits it and then depends on it.)
The inference is false by established geometry, and the same sentence disproves it. 01: "anyone on it was in plain view of the study window for the better part of twenty minutes" — the road is in view on the way down as on the way up, and she of all people knows the tower's sightline: 01 has her stop and look back up the road at the bends, checking them against the Weave's image. And Edwin is, at that instant, watching her from the window. So: she could not reasonably have judged herself unseen, she is not unseen, and the beat's poignancy depends on a judgement the story has ruled out.
Number fails on the clock. She cast the binding minutes ago, in the same morning as 01 and 02; no day has elapsed. "Twenty-nine more" only parses if a full day has been spent, i.e. it wants to be thirty. Secondary problem in the same breath: at line 23 she cannot say whether the destiny will fill in — "I think. It's the— it's the first time I've used it" — and twenty lines later she quotes an exact cooldown figure for the same never-used ability. The certainty is selected for the joke, not for what she knows.
The question is empty. Flat: is there an inn — the one I saw, with the drovers on the sign. She answers it herself inside the same three sentences, and 02 already has her working the village (post-house, "in the village they said"). Nothing is asked; nothing could be told her. A listener would take the tag question as needing a reply and there is no reply available.
**13. Line 47 — "who had heard reassuring and nothing on either side of it."
