A continent-scale sketch: shape, size class, latitude band, major mountain ranges with tectonic rationale, rivers/drainage, prevailing winds and rain shadows, climate zones. The story region must plausibly be temperate maritime-ish farmland (apple country, real winters, big weather formations worth steering, a coast within Edwin's professional reach — canon says coast parishes and sea trade exist, and the seas are dangerous with monsters so offshore sailing is limited; other continents unknown).

Chosen high-level design:

Continent: Europe-without-Russia scale, mid-latitude (~48–52°N analogue), western edge on open ocean; monster water bounds everything offshore.
Tectonics: young high north–south fold range down the eastern third (collision); ancient worn crystalline shield across the north (the Reaches are its southern fringe — crags, storm weather); modest old southern hill belt; stable lowland platform in the western half = the farming heartland.
Climate: westerlies off the western ocean bring big steerable frontal systems — maritime temperate west (apple country, real winters), going continental eastward; warm-dry south coast behind the southern hills.
Coast: west/south-west of the vale, ~50–70 mi — inside Edwin's six-county range; explains coast parishes, sea-weather recalls, and the whale up the (tidal, west-flowing) river.
Vale = upper country of a west-flowing river system; Ashway bridge (8 mi E) crosses its last water; east road descends into a broad fen basin.
