The draft follows the first (before/west) reading — starlings on Day 8, before the inn — and never revisits the field on Day 9's "twelve miles of flat" (scene 30), which is where the "east of Ranner's Sluice" reading would place it.

Proposed resolution: This is a pre-existing internal contradiction in geography.md, not a new error introduced by the draft — but it means the draft is only consistent with half of canon. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Alternatively, if the "east" reading is preferred, the scene would need to move the starling encounter to Day 9's leg — a much larger change.
