You are the editing subagent for the third draft of Book 1 of the novel at redacted. Read CLAUDE.md first and obey it. Do not read notes/sealed/.
Your brief is the skill at .claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read it in full and follow it exactly. Your material: draft/book-01/scenes/14-three-letters.md, read after scenes 01–13 in the same directory (they bind what is on the page). redacted sentence: unpublished prose Also chapters/003-the-improbability-engine.md (its last section) and chapters/004-three-letters.md — the groundwork this restages, which the author rates good and which drew no comments from him on this passage.
Report findings only, per the skill's "How to report": quote, the Part and bullet failed, why in the skill's terms, and a concrete replacement or "cut". Then the two closing lines on any device a second round would be about. Do not edit. Do not commit. Your final message is the report.
I'll start by reading the required context.

I read the skill in full, scenes 01–13, the five canon files end to end (including the rulings at the bottom of each), and both groundwork chapters.

Part 1 — check every inference; check the dependents of every edit. The reason given is false inside this scene: two paragraphs earlier Sorrel "did not put the top one down with the others", said "Edwin," and held that letter out to him. He did not choose the Wystow letter off the seal; she handed it to him. redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Replacement: He read it in the wrong order, and knew it while he was doing it. She had picked it out for him and he had not argued.

Part 1 — check every fact inside the scene. The sentence before establishes his method as bringing up "everything with a seal on it". "The day's whole post" says he brought up the unsealed things too, which is the one thing the method excludes.

Part 7 — flag any reused line that a ruling has overtaken, against Part 3 (Literacy). institutions.md §Literacy is a ruling made after ch. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The joke does not need it — the thing the boy can't do is judge urgency, not read.
Replacement: The neighbour's boy had his letters and no judgement. His method, refined across several of the widow's absences, was to bring up everything with a seal on it, seals meaning quality.
4. "Researchers cast the way they footnote."
Part 6 — the plainest, most direct form at the sentence that lands the beat. The groundwork had "Researchers cast like they footnote." This is the same weakening as "he had not moved toward" for "he did not move towards": "the way they" adds two unstressed syllables in front of the punch word and turns the joke into a construction. It is also the scene's one aphorism and its only laugh in the Wystow half.
Replacement: restore Researchers cast like they footnote.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Part 6 — same test. The groundwork ran it as two sentences: "...expected his weather punctual. As lords went that was most of what Edwin asked." The verdict is the beat; subordinating it into a relative clause hangs it off the end of a list and it stops landing.
Replacement: restore the full stop and the two-sentence form.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Part 2 — the unwanted explanation, and the gesture at meaning. "He heard himself say it" is the beat and it carries a real proposition: he has priced the walk before deciding to make it. The next sentence footnotes it, telling the reader the moment was significant instead of leaving it. It is also a cadence where the scene wants a cut (voices.md, endings are cuts): as the scene's last line it closes the room, where "He heard himself say it" ends on the man already halfway east.
Replacement: cut. End on "Two days' walking." He heard himself say it.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Part 7 — openings are engines, not entrances; Edwin first. This is the turn of the book, and 130 words of it are postal housekeeping about an offstage widow, her sister's baby, a boy's sorting heuristic and a biscuit, with Edwin's first appearance in paragraph five. In the groundwork this passage was the close of ch. 003 — a pivot out of a scene that already had its engine running. Restaged as a scene opening it becomes exactly the "slow gentle laziness" entrance. The rest-register is for scenes that have earned stillness; this one starts something.
Replacement: open on the letters and demote the machinery to a clause behind them — start at "Three letters," said Sorrel, "come up the hill together. When did that last happen?", with Edwin at the ledger, and carry the widow Crane, the boy and the seals in a single subordinate sentence after Sorrel has squared them on the table. The biscuit and the tray survive; the lying-in and the sister at the coast do not need to be in this scene at all.
The device a second round would be about: the "wrong order" frame. The scene announces an ordering judgement — he read them wrong and knew it — and then never says what the right order was; the groundwork cashed it a page later ("She was first on the list however he ordered it"), and that payoff is not in this scene or anywhere in the fourteen drafted. Left as it stands it is a sentence shaped like weight with the weight in a scene that does not exist yet.
What it would take: either scene 15 lands the ordering explicitly and soon enough that a reader holds the promise, or the frame comes out of scene 14 entirely and the reading order is simply narrated (he took the Wystow letter because she handed it to him) — do not rescue it by rewording the sentence.
