You are the editing subagent for the third draft of Book 1 of the novel at redacted. Read CLAUDE.md first and obey it. Do not read notes/sealed/.
Your brief is the skill at .claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md — read it in full and follow it exactly. Your material: draft/book-01/scenes/07-can-you-actually-fight.md, read after scenes 01–06 in the same directory (they bind what is on the page). redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Report findings only, per the skill's "How to report": quote, the Part and bullet failed, why in the skill's terms, and a concrete replacement or "cut". Then the two closing lines on any device a second round would be about. Do not edit. Do not commit. Your final message is the report.
I'll start by reading the required context.

Part 1, final bullet (dependents of an edit) / fact check. Scene 04 rewrote Day 1 into the class's first casting of the compost cantrip: "the one he teaches third, after a fortnight of heaps with no magic in them", heap "built a fortnight ago", Mrs Tansy doing "the first one. Dry first… Then for real." A revision day of the whole five-spell course on the very next morning is impossible on that timetable — they have not been taught the keeping charm, frost-sense or water-finding, and canon's course is a fortnight a spell (farm-teaching.md, lay-masterable). The revision day is groundwork wording (ch. 002, where the cantrip was already in its third week) that scene 04's rewrite has overtaken.
Fix: drop the revision-day frame and make the morning the ordinary next lesson with Peri in it — the cantrip's second day (the heap left alone, a second heap or a dry-cast), with the keeping charm and the blessing appearing as things Edwin names and refuses to demonstrate out of order when Peri asks. If the five-in-miniature is wanted, it has to be a later scene in the course.

redacted sentence: unpublished prose Casting the cantrip on it again the next morning contradicts the lesson the previous scene was built to deliver. "Every wrist soft" also reads as a class fluent in a spell they first cast yesterday, and "the compost bed" is a third object (the class garden has beds, wrong in useful ways, and a heap): Part 1, a word doing a job it cannot do.
Fix: the class does not cast on that heap. Have them build or dry-cast on a second heap, and set Peri's question "over the new heap" rather than "over the compost bed".
3. *"They did the redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Part 1, a word doing a job it cannot do. Dry-casting is established two scenes earlier as "hands and the words and no mana" — it needs no target at all, so "dry-cast on a fencepost" is two incompatible things, and "for want of a sick ewe" supplies a reason the dry-cast does not need.
Fix: "They did the redacted dry, there being no sick beast in the garden to hold the door for."
redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Part 1, pronoun with no antecedent — and a repeat of a comment he has already made (reader-notes §4, ch. 002: "'make the ewe well' after the case stopped being ewe-specific"). The scene has generalised the spell to the sick-beast blessing; there is no ewe anywhere in it.

5. "There were two. Bar the garden gate to her… or teach the class."
Part 1, check every count / Part 5, a thread raised and dropped. There are three, and he took the third yesterday: he told her to get off his hill, and she is walking up it. The scene never registers that an order he gave has simply failed, which is the fact the morning is actually about.
Fix: make the count honest and let it carry the point — e.g. "There were two, now that get off my hill had been tried. redacted sentence: unpublished prose

Part 3, worldbuilding against canon. This is the scene's definition of the keeping charm, and it defines it as information only. magic.md (DRMacIver, 2026-08-26, binding) rules the charm hybrid: it reads the history and pushes back how long the thing will keep, and the date it reports already includes the push. Ch. redacted sentence: unpublished prose
Fix: "…the charm that read a fruit's whole year off it, gave it back a week or a season depending on how well it had been picked and packed, and told you the new date: keeps to spring, wants eating this week."
7. "as she had said before" / "as he had said before"
Part 6, the plainest form. "Before" reads as one prior occasion and kills the joke, which is liturgical repetition; ch. 002's "as she said every time / as he said every time" is the stronger form and he did not query it.
Fix: restore "as she said every time" and "as he said every time".
8. "and the blessing had held the door"
Part 6. Dropping ch. 002's "merely" flattens a contrast into two equal claims — the sentence's whole point is that the nursing saved the flock and the blessing did the small part.

9. "I was twenty-one and three years into the college at Wystow… and I never went back to Wystow."
Part 6, redundancy in a landed beat. Wystow twice in four sentences, and "three years into the college at Wystow" is limp where the beat wants the plainest form. (The facts themselves are correct against edwin.md — 21, three years in, never went back.)

Device. The one a second round would be about is the interrogation itself: three questions from Peri, three answers from Edwin, each answered fully and none of them changing anything — a recitation of the course's virtues with a listener attached, and the shed story delivered as a set piece into a silence Peri does not earn. It works only while the lesson is real work in front of them; it fails the moment the lesson is a revision-day parade of five spells the class has not learned, because then the class is scenery and Peri is being told things for the reader.
What it would take. Rebuild it on one live piece of work (finding 1 and 2): the heap that must be left alone, the charm he refuses to show her out of order, the blessing with no beast to bless. Then her questions are interruptions of something with a cost, his answers come out sideways while his hands are busy, and "Can you actually fight?" lands as the question that finally stops the work — rather than as the third item in a list.
