You are an independent quality evaluator for a novel being drafted in redacted. The author (DRMacIver) accepted act one (scenes 01–24) as 'generally very good' and 25–40 as 'pretty good'. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The scenes are being redrafted from scratch with an independent read every ~10 scenes. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted and Edwin had converged into one dated-declarative register, (3) Peri's engine had gone quiet (competent secretary rather than a person wrong from the foundations up), plus residual long compound openings. Those were acted on.

Your job: read the standard, then the newest scenes, and give a verdict with evidence, paying particular attention to whether the three warnings were acted on, and to redacted of Holm Deep (73–76) which is the book's set piece.

The standard: read draft/book-01/VOICE.md in full; then draft/book-01/scenes/01-, 02-, 05-, 06-, 13-, 19- (the exemplars) and 31-, 36-, 40-, 62-, 64-, 66- (accepted/holding register). Then notes/llm-tells.md and notes/premise.md ('not cozy', 'competence porn', 'teeth').

Scenes under evaluation: draft/book-01/scenes/67-* through 76-* (ten scenes). Note 74–76 have not yet had their editing lenses applied; 67–73 have. Skim 41–66 for drift across the whole new stretch.

STRICT: never read chapters/, rewrite/, draft/book-01/rejected-act2/, summaries/, or plans/book-01/arc-0*.md, unpublished or their git history; do not search for them.

Evaluate with quoted evidence: (1) prose at rest, wit in the events; (2) people say what they mean; (3) distinct voices (Edwin, Peri, redacted, redacted as a NEW adult who must not sound like redacted, redacted, redacted, Mattie, Sennet, redacted); (4) LLM tells at fingerprint rate, especially the writing motif count per scene, negative parallelism, counted templates, anaphora, compound openings, buttons; (5) Peri likeable, active, and wrong in the productive way (her Weave reading in 71; her status boxes in 74/78); (6) scene endings; (7) sameness of shape across ten scenes; (8) redacted: does it read as work in Edwin's viewpoint, with the power mismatch made literal, without ballad register, and does the Deep material keep its silence (nobody explains the hole; the drain speech in 75 — does Edwin explain more than one look allows?); (9) anything cryptic or abrupt; (10) the emotional line between Edwin and Peri across 67–72 (the order under the barn, the third pressing) — is it legible, earned, and free of any romantic colouring (a hard rule: none allowed).

Then a verdict on its own line: VERDICT: HOLDING / SLIPPING / DEGRADING — with three to six sentences of justification and the two or three most important concrete fixes. Be blunt. Do not edit any file.

I'll start by reading the standard.

I read VOICE.md, the exemplars (01, 02, 05, 06, 13, 19), the accepted/holding register (31, 36, 40, 62, 64, 66), llm-tells/premise, then 67–76 in full, and ran counts across 40–78.

The three warnings

1. The "writing it down" motif — fixed. Occurrences of write/wrote/written/writing per scene, whole stretch:

It is no longer a house verb. Where it survives it is load-bearing (Peri's "I've written it. Twice." in 68 is the emotional line, not a tic; redacted's "put my name against it" in 69 is her character). Warning discharged.

  1. redacted/Edwin convergence — fixed; a new one starting. Edwin now carries the long explanatory speeches (the blessing lesson in 68, the drain in 75) and redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose They are cleanly separate. But redacted has landed inside redacted's syntax, if not her content. redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose The problem is the shared sentence shape: redacted "That's your knee, not your head", redacted "That's a tide mark in a cistern", both on clipped That's-X declaratives and both saying numbers flat. She is distinguishable by what she does, not yet by how she sounds. redacted, redacted, Sennet, Mattie, redacted, the sluice-keeper ("That'll be the fence, then") are all cleanly themselves.

  2. Peri's engine — half-fixed, and the fix does not survive into redacted. Scene 71 unpublished redacted sentence: unpublished prose 72's "No." / "Show me the buckle." is the single best beat in the ten — active, unexplained-by-her, entirely legible. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Across 73–76 — the set piece — she speaks four times. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The other number. Not by one.") but it is her only line in the chamber. She is present, competent and silent, which is closer to the old warning than the fix admits. She is likeable and active; she is no longer wrong in a way that costs anything.

redacted (73–76)

This is the strongest work in the stretch and it is not close. It reads as work in Edwin's viewpoint throughout. redacted sentence: unpublished prose

Ballad register is disarmed on the page rather than avoided — 74 names the four ballads and answers them with a list: "There was no treasure in it. There were no bones of adventurers, no pillars, no carving" and then a poultry-house smell. That is the right move and it is done once.

The Deep keeps its silence, rigorously. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted's mortar line gets no answer and he gets back in the file. The yellow lamps end 76 with an order and no explanation. Nobody explains the hole.

redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted or no redacted. I would cut "something" to "water", and let redacted, not Edwin, be the one who puts the date next to the mouth.

Sameness of shape — the live problem

The residual compound-opening warning was not acted on; it has hardened into the house sentence. Fourteen scenes from 45 to 73 open on NAME + past verb + at TIME + with/comma-trailer:

74/75/76 escape it only by adopting a second template of their own ("The ramp went down…" / "The third way went down…" / "The fifth way was a passage…"). Endings match: 74, 75 and 76 all close on a redacted instruction to redacted, two of them containing the word write.

Second tic, new since the "people say what they mean" ruling: because-density. 68, 69 and 71 carry ten, ten and eleven becausees apiece (56 has sixteen). The ruling is right and the explanations are welcome, but they are all being bolted on with the same connective, and it produces a mannerism — "and here's the reason before you ask for it" is now a reflex Edwin has.

The emotional line, 67–72

Legible, earned, and clean. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The third pressing in 71 is mutual argument, not intimacy; the reciprocity is Peri writing in his book. No romantic colouring anywhere in the ten. Nothing cryptic and nothing abrupt: every exchange stands alone, questions get answers, callbacks ("the four things", "not in the line") are restated in full when they carry weight.

redacted sentence: unpublished prose

VERDICT: HOLDING

The prose is at rest, the wit is in the events, nobody talks cryptically, and redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose Two of the three warnings are genuinely discharged: the writing motif is down from fourteen a scene to one, and redacted and Edwin are cleanly separate voices. What has not been fixed is the sentence architecture: fourteen consecutive scenes open on the same clock-stamped compound, three consecutive scenes end on a redacted order containing "write", and the explain-yourself ruling has produced a ten-per-scene because habit. And Peri's engine has been swapped for Peri's silence — 71 and 72 prove she can still carry a scene, but across the set piece she speaks four times and is described as saying nothing in five separate scenes.

Three fixes, in order: (1) break the opening template — at least half the next stretch should start mid-action, mid-dialogue, or on an object, with the time arriving later or not at all, and 74/75/76's "The Nth way went…" wants the same treatment; (2) give Peri two or three real speeches inside redacted, at least one of them a wrong reading she commits to out loud and has to withdraw — the status-box thread in 74/78 is the obvious carrier, and her restraint there currently costs her the engine; (3) in 75, cut "something comes up that hole" to water, move the dating of the onset off Edwin, and generally thin the because connective by letting a reason sit in its own sentence. Fourth, cheap: give redacted a syntax of her own before the Fellowship's three arrive and she has to hold a room — right now only her habits, not her sentences, tell her from redacted.
