Drafting to the end of book one

2026-09-02

David:

With the new chapter layout we've got less of a buffer than I thought we did. I'd like to catch us up and build up a larger buffer. Can you build out to the end of book 1? Revisit every couple of chapters and ask an independent subagent to evaluate quality and stop if you think it's degrading too much.

I'll start by reading the project state to see where Book 1 stands and what the buffer looks like.

Scenes 41–89 were rejected and need redrafting from their existing plans, and act three still lacks a scene list. I'll now load the voice exemplars, notes, and canon before starting drafts.

The independent review of 41–46 confirms the standard holds, though it flags repetitive scene shapes and two overly composed endings. I'm now applying those fixes to 43–46 and reworking 49 so Peri makes the discovery instead of just watching Edwin do it.

redacted sentence: unpublished prose The working tree is clean.

What was built today

  • Act two, scenes 41–89, redrafted from scratch (25–40 were done the day before). Act three, scenes 90–118, planned in SCENES.md and drafted. Every scene has had the flat-restatement pass, a canon lens, and a pre-David pass applied, and the overlap checker is clean against the deleted drafts.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose Each read's fixes were applied before the next stretch: counted-out speeches, the writing-it-down motif, redacted and Edwin converging, Peri going silent in redacted, the opening template, because density, redacted and redacted sounding like redacted. The last read called 77–89 the strongest stretch and said act two closes as a movement.

The ending, as designed and now on the page
Scene 118 unpublished mirrors scene 01. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted asking when the frost is. Peri takes it, not Edwin: she plans the whole job (frost-sense at dusk, a warning rather than a promise, her own name on the answer, and the ewes brought down by hurdle, which is not magic). Edwin is at the same table with redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose The final read judged that it lands: a reader can name the change of standing without being told, and it is an action, not a cadence or a moral. redacted sentence redacted has no opinion and gives one sentence about her grandmother's people.

Things that want your ruling (all flagged by the lenses, none silently changed in canon)
redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted instead of left open.

  • redacted now knows Edwin is the one the Seal was cast on, which supersedes two canon lines saying she does not.
  • Peri's pencil line under the nineteenth of Harvestmonth stays unread by Edwin, on purpose, and the last page says so.
  • redacted, R. Shore, and the redacted tally differ from the groundwork in small ways the lenses listed.
  • You said on 30 August you wanted to review act two before act three began; the build-to-the-end instruction overrode that, so both acts await your read.

Still owed

  • Your read of 41–118, and the consistency-backfill of the lenses' "new facts" lists into canon.
    redacted sentence: unpublished prose
  • A written ruling form for redacted in her file, since every pass caught the same breach.

plans/NEXT.md unpublished has all of this; VOICE.md Β§3.8 records your note that the rejected scenes may be consulted for facts by a non-drafting session.

Your eight comments on 41 and 42, all fixed and marked resolved:

  • The second question is now "Yes. redacted sentence: unpublished prose
redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose
  • "you feel it go" became "it shows."
  • "the whole test" became "the test"; the two other "the whole" uses in 41 also went.
  • The book-entry speech is now attributed to Peri and says plainly that this is her third box and none came where the thing happened.
    redacted sentence: unpublished prose

Generalised across the book

  • "the whole" swept from 67 uses to 31, all of the remaining ones concrete spans ("the whole set" of revealings, scene 17's messenger line). Twenty "the whole way"s are gone.
  • "arithmetic" gone entirely, including the one on scene 30 you had already commented on and which was still there.
  • "ruled" for decided recast in 42, 65, 82, 104. Ruling lines on a page stays.
  • "isn't mine to give/write" recast in 36, 41, 83.

Why the checker didn't catch it. The arithmetic rule existed but nothing in the per-scene pipeline ran the linter. The pre-David pass now has a Part 0 that runs it first and treats every regex hit as a finding. Running it over all 118 scenes turned up 18 error-level hits of your standing rules, all now cleared (verdict "which was the point" clauses, "with the expression of a man who" formulas, an "I'll not", a "want bringing", "put the kettle across", three "in the voice of a" tags, a "three centuries" opener).

Linter changes. Three new warn rules: the-whole, not-mine-to, ruled-for-decided. A new test asserts every rule's examples fire and, for error rules, its counter-examples don't. That test found five existing rules whose patterns were wrong (negative-parallelism fired on ordinary "not sure, but he went"; wants-gerund fired on "wants nothing"; appraisal-formula, verdict-clause and a said-mid rule missed their own examples), all fixed. Tests pass.

The fifteen lp-prefixed borderline comments from the language-police run are still open for your rulings. Overlap checks on every edited scene showed only pre-existing title-line and act-one matches.

David:

What are the things I need to rule on?

Two sets. The fifteen language-police borderlines filed as comments, and the canon departures recorded in plans/NEXT.md. unpublished

Language-police borderlines (open comments; each needs a keep or cut)

Author's notes:

  1. Note 14: "a hundred and eighty years" is right for Broadbalk but the plural sweeps in Park Grass at about 170. "the oldest above a hundred and eighty" would be strictly true.
  2. Note 24: "The one way to ruin the test is to let the trays dry out" overclaims. "The quickest way" is safer.
  3. redacted sentence: unpublished prose
  4. Note 32: "The difference is regularly the same field, the same seed..." is self-contradictory as written and wants turning round.

Scenes:
5. Scene 06: "thirty thousand mornings" is about 82 years against a man of 350. Does the rhetorical number stand?
6. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Same family in 13 ("the third thing I've asked you for") and 34 ("unasked and unremarked").
7. Scene 15: "the eastern extension" arrives undefined on first mention.
8. Scene 21: three items. "a dozen pear trees" against "two dozen pear whips" two sentences earlier. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted maxim stack: judges keep "The bank does the arguing" and trim the rest.
9. Scene 23: two aphorisms in one paragraph. Keep the robe line, cut the minute-a-day line?
10. Scene 24: three narrator aphorisms against a budget of one. The leaving line is Dob's and the likely keeper.
11. Scene 32: aphorism stack. Judges keep the closing know/believe reason.
12. Scene 34: "under the other eleven" versus "the door's two" later. If eleven is right, "the day's two figures" would clear the stall.
13. redacted sentence Also "your mother, Tess" misparses as apposition.
14. Scene 39: the date-altering lesson opens and closes on portable maxims; cut one? And "Why six?" is never grounded.
15. Scene 40: "what the census says two feet higher" stalls on first read against a census stated to cover all three depths.

Canon departures in acts two and three (in plans/NEXT.md, unpublished adopted unless overruled)
redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted with Peri carrying it.

  • redacted now knows Edwin was the one the Seal was cast on, superseding two "does not know" lines in her file and Peri's.
  • Peri's pencil line under the nineteenth stays unread by Edwin, and the last page says so.
  • Small differences from the groundwork in redacted, R. Shore (tenant, not clerk), and the redacted tally.
  • Plot 14 walks on the 14th and 15th; "redacted in a day" became the second morning.

Also still owed rather than ruled: your read of 41 to 118, and chapter grouping from scene 19 on.

  • Scene 06's "thirty thousand mornings" is now "a hundred thousand", which matches three hundred years.
  • Scene 21 keeps "The bank does the arguing" and loses the other three maxims; the pears are two dozen throughout; the notes for the fourth lesson get written tonight, before he leaves.
  • Scenes 23, 24 and 32 are each down to one narrator aphorism. Dob's leaving line and the robe line are the keepers.
  • Scene 36 reads "I have three hundred years of studying patients and one afternoon of fighting", which keeps the honesty beat without the maxim.
  • Scene 39 now grounds the six: registers a fortnight coming and a fortnight reading, and four weeks under the second line. The closing maxim is gone.
  • Scene 15 defines the eastern extension on first mention as the college's newer trial plots.

The fifteen comments are marked resolved. Lint and overlap checks are clean on every edited scene and note.

Canon accepted (98b4939). redacted's and Peri's files now record that redacted learns at 111 who the Seal was cast on. The timeline runs to Day 98 with the auger settled at redacted, and the magic file has redacted on the second morning. NEXT.md records your acceptance.

One thing the agent could not find: the plot 14 "14th and 15th" discrepancy I had noted. It checked scenes 105, 106, 113 and 114 against the timeline and found them already in agreement, so it changed nothing there. I read that as my earlier note being stale rather than a live conflict.

I'm adding a resync command to the uploader that will edit already-published chapters in place, rebuild scheduled drafts from current text, and upload chapters 19–58 following the daily schedule.

The dry run works: six chapters are already public, fourteen drafts get rebuilt, and 40 new ones get scheduled. One cosmetic bug in the plan print to fix, then commit the tool.

Everything that can run in parallel is running: the continuity read, five canon-extraction chunks, and five author's-note batches. Chapters 19–58 are mapped and committed, and the uploader has a resync command whose dry run shows six chapters live, fourteen drafts to rebuild, and forty new chapters to schedule daily through 24 October. When the agents report I'll apply continuity fixes, reconcile canon, merge the glossary, then run the language-police pass over the new prose and notes.
