The author (DRMacIver) accepted act one (scenes 01–24) as 'generally very good' and scenes 25–40 as 'pretty good ... useful copy-editing'. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The scenes are being redrafted from scratch, and the author asked that an independent reader evaluate quality every couple of chapters and say whether it is degrading. A previous independent read of the new 41–46 returned HOLDING with three warnings: sameness of scene shape (measure, record, explain, a local character's flat closing verdict), the fen's adults converging on one clipped register, and two composed endings.
Your job: read the standard, then the newest scenes, and give a verdict with evidence, paying particular attention to whether the three earlier warnings were acted on.

Evaluate with quoted evidence: (1) prose at rest, wit in the events; (2) people say what they mean — reasons on the page, no cryptic fragments or callback tokens; (3) distinct voices (Edwin, Peri, Mattie, Tess, Burl, redacted, redacted, redacted, redacted); (4) LLM tells at fingerprint rate (verdict clauses, gesture-at-meaning, near-idioms, false precision, maxim-capped dialogue, triads, negative parallelism, house words, the repeated blocking 'closed the book on her pencil' / 'wrote it' / 'struck it'); (5) Peri likeable and active, with her own agenda; (6) scene endings; (7) sameness — does the discovery move vary across 47–57 or does one shape repeat; count how many scenes end on a local character's flat verdict; (8) whether the stretch reads like a novel moving forward (stakes rising toward the Deep) or like a sequence of procedures; (9) is anything cryptic or abrupt.

Two genuine lapses, both abruptness rather than crypsis:
Mattie is the strongest voice in the book after Edwin and Peri: "Don't tell me yet ... redacted sentence: unpublished prose Not fed. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted is procedural and wants the answer to be hers, and 55's "I write what I walked" is a real character position. Tess, redacted, redacted are functional and correctly thin.
The earlier warning about the fen's adults converging is only half acted on. The clipped register has loosened, but a new convergence has replaced it: every landowner gets an ownership-rights speech in nearly the same beat. One risk: her wrongness — the engine — is now mostly self-corrected inside the same paragraph, so she is converging on Edwin's method and the friction is thinning. 54's column of conveniences (the mis-sorted box, the roof, the cobbler with a last her size) is the counterweight and is the strongest passage in the eleven scenes.
Ending types: local character's flat verdict — 47 (Mattie), 48 (Mattie), 50 (Mattie), 53 (redacted) = four of eleven, down from the previous stretch's diagnosis. Peri-closing — 55, 56. Discovery moves do vary, and the "measure, record, explain" warning was acted on: 47 the local reads the field better than the expert; 48 the expert's arithmetic is superseded by a corn docket; 49 a geometric derivation the student does first; 50 a decision and a signed prediction; 51 an error of omission surfaced by the student; 52 search by hand where no instrument helps; 53 forty years of local knowledge reframing age; 54 disclosure and the improbability column; 55 a negative result closed by a third party; 57 the prediction fails. That is a good spread. The residual sameness is the Edwin speech template above, not the scene engine.
Novel, and moving. The stretch does real escalation: one field becomes three sites over sixty miles; "it didn't start here" (54) relocates the whole problem; the middles walk north-east toward the fen; redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose The Deep is being loaded properly through redacted's roster and the candle. The one procedural sag is 56's first 700 words: fence specification and nursery practice, correct and dull, before the level-up arrives.
Only the two flagged in §2: 55's untagged speaker change and 47's opening indirect-discourse dump. Nothing else in eleven scenes required a re-read.
VERDICT: HOLDING
The three earlier warnings were acted on unevenly: scene shape genuinely varies now (ten distinguishable discovery moves in eleven scenes), the composed endings are down to two, and the repeated blocking is gone — but the sameness has migrated rather than disappeared. Edwin now speaks in one template ("I'll say two/three things, and here's the reason for each, and write it down") in eight of eleven scenes, every scene opens with a long compound sentence that announces its own turn, and every correction in the book arrives as negative parallelism, which is the single most-cited AI construction and is now the reflex. The fen's adults have stopped converging on one register but have converged on one dramatic function instead — three landowners in a row assert saying-rights over their ground and are right, and the prose notices the repetition without fixing it. Against that, the prose is at rest where it should be, the reasons are on the page throughout, Peri is active, likeable and driving plot, and the stakes are rising properly toward the Deep; this is not the rejected act two and it is not degrading. Fixes, in order: (1) break Edwin's enumerated-speech template — let him make an argument without counting it out, and let at least one exchange end without anything being written in a book; (2) ration negative parallelism to roughly one per two scenes and vary the eleven scene-opening sentences, several of which should just start with an event; (3) stop giving each new farmer an ownership speech — redacted's should have been about something else, since Sennet already owns that beat — and fix 55's untagged speaker change, which is the one paragraph here that reads like the rejected draft.
