You are an independent quality evaluator for a novel being drafted in redacted. The author (DRMacIver) accepted act one (scenes 01–24) as 'generally very good'. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The whole of the rest of the book has now been redrafted from scratch (41–118), with independent reads every ~10 scenes; six previous reads returned HOLDING. The last (90–100) warned: 'because' flat at ~5 per thousand (since thinned by a pass over 90–100); five of eleven endings on writing; redacted sharing redacted's clipped grammar; redacted speaking in fragments. The author also said of the previous draft's ending: 'I found the ending a little unsatisfying... the book just sort of ended... it would be good to have some sort of slightly more satisfying stopping point.' The design answer (plans/book-01/overview.md unpublished section 5, binding) is a handover: on the last page Peri does, unremarked, what Edwin did on the book's first page.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose that last is a hard rule), (b) whether the act builds to the ending rather than touring sites, (c) whether the ending LANDS: read draft/book-01/scenes/01-* and then 118-* back to back and say whether a reader can name the change of standing between these people, whether it is a cadence, summary or moral (all forbidden), and whether it is satisfying as the end of a book, (d) the new adults at Wystow (redacted, redacted, redacted, redacted, redacted, the salts man, Ossett, R. Shore) — distinct in sentence shape from each other and from redacted/Edwin/Peri, (e) 'because' density per scene, endings on writing, negative parallelism, counted templates, anaphora, buttons, openings on NAME + verb + TIME.
The standard: read draft/book-01/VOICE.md in full; then draft/book-01/scenes/01-, 02-, 05-, 06-, 13-, 19- (the exemplars) and 62-, 66-, 71-, 81-, 87-, 95- (holding register). Then notes/llm-tells.md and notes/premise.md (especially the Edwin/Peri hard rule).
Scenes under evaluation: draft/book-01/scenes/101-* through 118-* (eighteen scenes). Note 113–118 have not yet had all their editing lenses applied; 101–112 have.
STRICT: never read chapters/, rewrite/, draft/book-01/rejected-act2/, summaries/, or plans/book-01/arc-0*.md, unpublished or their git history; do not search for them.
Then a verdict on its own line: VERDICT: HOLDING / SLIPPING / DEGRADING — with three to six sentences of justification, a separate one-paragraph judgement on the ending (does it land, and why), and the two or three most important concrete fixes. Be blunt. Do not edit any file.
I'll start by reading the standard.

I've read VOICE.md, the exemplars (01, 02, 05, 06, 13, 19), the holding register (62, 66, 71, 81, 87, 95), and all eighteen scenes 101–118, plus llm-tells/premise for the hard rule.
(a) The reckoning at 111. Peri's half is clean and un-deflected: she names the Seal to redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted frames it as household-agreement law, and Edwin is not in the sentence. The hard rule is not breached in 111 or anywhere in 101–118.
What is not earned is the other half. The man it was done to says nothing to it. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Nothing." Then 112 makes the evasion structural — Peri has written a line in redacted's copy under the nineteenth, Edwin sees it and deliberately does not read it, and the reader never gets it either, and it is never mentioned again in 113–118. So the book's central relational debt is discharged by an unread pencil line. It is explained clearly on the page (Edwin gives redacted his full reasoning, so this is not the act-two "cryptic" failure), but it is a withheld payload at exactly the place the author complained the last draft withheld one.
(b) Build vs tour. It builds. 101–107 is one cumulative engine — five wrong versions of the instrument, Peri's sentence that turns it, twelve walks, the null, redacted, the institutional fight — and 108–112 turns it outward (Sorrel's correction, the fifth site arriving through Ossett's channel rather than Edwin's, the reckoning). 113–118 is redacted proper: taught to five, redacted off, road east, sixth place by letter, and Peri running redacted off her own roster. No scene here is a stop on a tour. The two weakest are 113, which repeats the 104–106 competence register with a new cast, and 116, a weather-delay day that earns its place only on Peri's roster speech.
(c) The ending. 01 and 118 back to back: 01 is Edwin at the ledger with a nine-word letter from the Pellings, arranging weather, ending "He looked up at the sound of somebody not stopping." 118 is a nine-word letter from redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose It is an action, not a cadence, summary or moral, and it points forward rather than closing. It works.
Two reservations. Edwin's "That's all I've got. The rest is yours" is a verbatim reuse of redacted's line to him in 112, and it is an abdication speech doing in dialogue what the mirrored last line already does in event — redacted is stated twice. And "and he's wrong about the second half" is a button-shaped closer inside Peri's speech.
(d) The Wystow adults. redacted, redacted, redacted and redacted are genuinely distinct from each other and from the three principals — redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted elegiac professional sentences; redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose But four of the eight named are not characters, they are documents: Ossett never speaks on the page, R. Shore never speaks, the salts man never speaks (his page is reported), and redacted has two lines and one trait. Thematically apt for a book about who writes things down; still, half the promised new cast has no sentence shape at all.
(e) Mechanics.
VERDICT: HOLDING
redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose The act builds rather than tours, and the ending does the job the design asked of it. It holds despite, not because of, the mechanics: the write-verb tic and the write-ending have hardened from a habit into a template across eighteen consecutive scenes, and "because" was thinned in 90–100 and has come straight back. And the one place where the book should be most exposed — Edwin's answer to Peri about the Seal — is the one place it withholds, and never returns.
The ending, judged on its own. It lands. The mirror is exact and unremarked: a nine-word farmer's letter, a mage at a desk, and someone coming up a hill without slowing — the same sentence, a different name in front of it. A reader can say what has changed without being told: the work has passed, and Peri is the one who gets interrupted now. Nothing is summarised, moralised or rounded off; the last event is an arrival, so the book stops on forward motion rather than on a chord. It answers the "the book just sort of ended" complaint because the reader is given a position to hold at the close, not merely a stopping place. Its one weakness is redundancy: Edwin's spoken "The rest is yours" performs redacted a page before the last line performs it better, and a reader who has just been told the theme in dialogue gets less out of being shown it.
The three fixes, in order.
