Run the pre-David editing pass on two newly drafted scenes of a novel in redacted. First read the whole of .claude/skills/pre-david-pass/SKILL.md and follow it exactly (Parts 1–7; findings only, each with quote, the Part/bullet it fails, one sentence why, and a concrete replacement or 'cut'; never write 'clean'; do NOT edit any file — report only; a finding that cuts a reason, answer, explanation or qualification is presumptively wrong unless the thing is nonsense or does not fit, and the finding must say which).

An independent reader has warned that this stretch is repeating one scene shape (measure, record, explain, a local character's flat closing verdict) and that the fen's adults converge on one clipped register. Check whether 54–55 vary the shape and register, and flag where they do not.
STRICT: never read chapters/, rewrite/, draft/book-01/rejected-act2/, summaries/, or plans/book-01/arc-0*.md, unpublished or their git history; do not search for them.
Pay particular attention to: whether Edwin's naming of the pattern of easy things in 54 stays deniable and plain (no portent, no narrator gloss, said once, its reasons all given, and nobody concluding anything); whether Mattie's speech in 54 is in her grammar; sentences that do not restate flat; counts and clocks; viewpoint; Peri staying likeable; gesture-at-meaning lines and the banned family; em dashes; dialect; each scene's ending (a scene may end on an answer or a decision; a composed button, epigram or callback quip is the fault — 55's 'Both. Middle.' is a candidate: rule on it); whether redacted's four-mile speech is hers (attestation, piles, anchors) and not a lecture; whether the candle beat is left unexplained by everyone (it must be).
Finish with two lines per scene: is there any device a second round of comments would be about, and what would it take to make it work or remove it.

Part 4 (redacted's grammar; the lecture). "A dungeon leaks. Part 4 (redacted). "Nothing at the Sluice. There's never been anything at the Sluice." — The identical-clause doubling is redacted's construction (redacted.md 6b, one per scene, hers alone), and the second clause makes redacted the warrant, which minor.md forbids: he refuses in procedure, never in opinion, and never says a thing on his own authority. Same fault in "The map's not wrong," said redacted. Fix: "Nothing at the Sluice. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted's and redacted signed it," said redacted.

Part 5 (a callback word carrying meaning). Part 5 (the ending — ruling requested). "'Both. Middle.'" — This is the fault. It is a two-word callback to 54's "Middle column. Left side.", it closes the scene like a bow, and on its own it is undecodable: a reader has to reach back a scene to learn that "middle" is a column on a page and "both" means the knowing and the wanting. VOICE.md's ending rule permits an answer, a reason or a decision and forbids the resolving button; this is a button built out of a callback token, which is also the "people say what they mean" failure. *Fix: end on the thing said in full — "'I know. Rulings the brief asked for. The candle beat is left unexplained by everybody: redacted reports the twenty minutes and the flame and says she is saying it in the room, redacted says nothing, Edwin says nothing at all about it in the scene or on the walk home, and Peri writes it down as a fact she cannot use. It stays unexplained and should be left exactly as it is. Edwin's naming of the pattern of easy things in 54 is deniable and plain, said once, refused a meaning, has a checked reason beside every item, and nobody in the scene concludes anything from it — the only leak is the "said twice" maxim above.
Shape and register, against the reader's warning. 54 varies genuinely: its move is a confession that costs the confessor, and the second half is an audit Peri conducts on Edwin rather than one he conducts on a field. 55 does not: a question is asked, two figures are produced, they are written with a name and a date under them, and a local character closes on a flat verdict — which is the shape of 45, 48, 49, 50 and 53. The register converges in the same place: Mattie takes redacted's pile in 54, redacted takes Edwin's definitional in 55, redacted takes redacted's doubling. The fix for the shape is not a rewrite: the candle is the one thing in 55 that is not a measurement, and moving it before the four-mile question — redacted arrives with the flame that stood straight and gets round to the distances after — makes the scene turn on an observation nobody can file rather than on two figures going into a book.
