You are an independent quality evaluator for a novel being drafted in redacted. The author (DRMacIver) accepted act one (scenes 01–24) as 'generally very good' and 25–40 as 'pretty good'. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The scenes have been redrafted from scratch with an independent read every ~10 scenes. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted order containing 'write', (3) 'because'-density of ten per scene, (4) Peri present, competent and silent through redacted, (5) redacted distinguishable by habits not by sentences. Those were acted on where possible.
Your job: read the standard, then the newest scenes, and give a verdict with evidence, paying particular attention to whether those warnings were acted on, and to whether the END OF ACT TWO (77–89: the injury, the way out, the bone-setter, redacted walked, the reckoning, the secondment, Marsh's letter, the field, the boy, the month's debt, the road) lands as the close of a movement — the author has said the previous draft's ending 'just sort of ended', and while the book's ending is act three, act two's close should feel like a movement completing, not a list of errands.
The standard: read draft/book-01/VOICE.md in full; then draft/book-01/scenes/01-, 02-, 05-, 06-, 13-, 19- (the exemplars) and 31-, 40-, 62-, 66-, 71-, 74- (accepted/holding register). Then notes/llm-tells.md and notes/premise.md.
Scenes under evaluation: draft/book-01/scenes/77-* through 89-* (thirteen scenes). Note 86–89 have not yet had their editing lenses applied; 77–85 have. Skim 41–76 for drift across the whole redraft.
STRICT: never read chapters/, rewrite/, draft/book-01/rejected-act2/, summaries/, or plans/book-01/arc-0*.md, unpublished or their git history; do not search for them.
Evaluate with quoted evidence: (1) prose at rest, wit in the events; (2) people say what they mean; (3) distinct voices (Edwin, Peri, redacted, redacted, redacted, redacted, Mattie, Sennet, Sorrel-by-letter, the bone-setter, redacted's boy); (4) LLM tells at fingerprint rate: opening templates, 'because' density, writing-motif endings, negative parallelism, counted templates, anaphora, buttons; (5) Peri: likeable, active, wrong in the productive way, and does she have a voice across 77–89 or is she a secretary again; (6) scene endings; (7) sameness of shape; (8) the injury and its aftermath (77–79): work, not ballad; the power mismatch; the emotional line between Edwin and Peri free of any romantic colouring (hard rule); (9) the money scenes (82, 84): are they alive or recitation; (10) does the act close as a movement — what is the through-line from 77 to 89, and does 89 send the reader into act three wanting it; (11) anything cryptic or abrupt.
Then a verdict on its own line: VERDICT: HOLDING / SLIPPING / DEGRADING — with three to six sentences of justification and the two or three most important concrete fixes. Be blunt. Do not edit any file.
I'll start by reading the standard, then work through the scenes.

Read VOICE.md, the exemplars (01, 02, 05, 06, 13, 19), the holding-register comparators (31, 40, 62, 66, 71, 74), llm-tells.md, premise.md, 77–89 in full, plus 47 and 55 as drift spot-checks, and ran a mechanical census over all 89 scenes.
The four prior warnings were acted on, mostly.
"Write that." The census's other flags (77, 84, 87, 88) are false positives on incidental words. The three-in-a-row redacted-order problem is gone; 80 ends on a redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prosebecause-clause-and-clause.Prose at rest, wit in events. Holding. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The comedy is event-comedy: redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose Negative parallelism: six instances in 41–89, at fingerprint-free rate. Verdict clauses (", which…") run 2–6 a scene, at the top of tolerable but mostly causal rather than grading.
The injury (77–79). Work, not ballad, and the power mismatch is executed exactly as premise.md specifies. The archmage's contribution to the fight is one spell he last cast at nineteen, and the System's verdict on it is Kills: 1. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose That is the single best scene in the stretch.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose The one place ambiguity leaks is 83's close: "and were glad, and were something else as well that he had never found the word for in three hundred years of ending lessons." The scene has already named the feeling (watching a pupil not need you); withholding the word invites the reader to supply one, and the hard rule allows zero ambiguity. VOICE.md's own "name the voice plainly" ruling points the same way.
The money scenes. 84 is alive: it has an actual dispute (redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted cannot pay more than his own hands get), and it is broken by redacted finding the back page nobody had read since Seedmonth. 82 is the weakest scene of the thirteen. redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose The one flicker of life there (redacted asking to have the valuation figure said again) is the model for what the rest of that paragraph should be doing.
Act two as a movement. It closes. The through-line from 77 to 89 is that Edwin stops being the only instrument: he breaks the arm that does the work, is told his slowness is a fault with a drill against it, watches his own private failure become four posted rules and a struck name, hands the chain to Peri and Mattie and the stakes to a fourteen-year-old, is corrected from forty miles off by Sorrel ("The fourth this year. I keep the count."), and leaves with a warden seconded on her own written terms and Peri entered on the paper in her own name. 87 is the quiet thesis of it — a boy asking what to write when nothing changes, and being told "Nothing to write is a reading." And the exit has traction: Marsh's letter puts a date on him ("I will not delay again, because I have not the sentence to do it with"), the destination is named (the redacted, engineers who will not describe a circumstance in writing), and 89 ends on a cut into forward work — "and had not yet said the air." That is a movement completing, not a list of errands.
Nothing cryptic. I checked specifically for the failure the old draft died of. Every exchange in 77–89 is comprehensible cold; where a callback is used ("middle column", "fifty times an hour", "ask me in a month") the meaning is restated in full on the page.
VERDICT: HOLDING
This is the strongest stretch of the redraft, and better than 41–76. The four standing warnings were genuinely acted on rather than gestured at: openers are varied, the write-order endings are down to one, and Peri has gone from competent-and-silent to the person who saves the protagonist's life, forces a finding into the Charter's book, and demands her own name on an instrument. The injury sequence is work rather than ballad, the power mismatch pays off exactly as the premise specifies, and the act closes on a real through-line — Edwin ceasing to be the only instrument — with a dated obligation pulling the reader into act three. Two things keep it from being unqualified: because-density has plateaued rather than fallen and is now the most audible sentence-mechanism in the book, and 82 is recitation where 84 is drama.
The three fixes, in order:
because-thinning pass over 80 and 88 specifically — keep every reason, but vary how a third of them attach.
