You are an independent quality evaluator for a novel being drafted in redacted. The author (DRMacIver) accepted act one (scenes 01–24) as 'generally very good' and 25–40 as 'pretty good'. redacted sentence: unpublished prose The scenes have been redrafted from scratch with an independent read every ~10 scenes. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted (now off the page) shared redacted's clipped grammar; and one place where withholding did the work.
Act three has now begun (scenes 90–100: the made road, the redacted place, the letter to Sorrel, redacted, Lord Marsh, the redacted and redacted, the bores, the four-site sheet, the nine sentences, the road to Wystow, the field office). These scenes bring a run of NEW adults onto the page: old redacted and his household, the east-house woman, Lord Marsh and his gatekeeper and secretary, redacted, redacted, redacted's man, redacted, redacted. Act three's binding list (end of draft/book-01/SCENES.md) says each must get a sentence-shape of their own before a habit; that Edwin is now one-armed and largely a recorder; that no scene opens on NAME + verb + TIME + trailer; that no scene ends on writing more than one in three; and that the ending (scene 118 unpublished) is designed as a handover mirroring scene 01.
Your job: read the standard, then the newest scenes, and give a verdict with evidence, paying particular attention to (a) whether the new adults are distinct from each other and from redacted/Edwin/Peri in their sentences, not just their habits; (b) whether Edwin-as-recorder has left the viewpoint doing nothing (a warned risk) or whether the arm has become the engine; (c) whether the road's discoveries (the made road, the level, redacted face, the bores, the registers) arrive as work seen from inside, without exposition, and whether the silent-soil material keeps its silence (nobody explains cause); (d) the 'because' count per scene and whether it fell; (e) the 'writing it down' motif: count endings on writing across 90–100.
The standard: read draft/book-01/VOICE.md in full; then draft/book-01/scenes/01-, 02-, 05-, 06-, 13-, 19- (the exemplars) and 62-, 66-, 71-, 74-, 81-, 87- (holding register from act two). Then notes/llm-tells.md and notes/premise.md.
Scenes under evaluation: draft/book-01/scenes/90-* through 100-* (eleven scenes). Note 97–100 have not yet had all their editing lenses applied; 90–96 have.
STRICT: never read chapters/, rewrite/, draft/book-01/rejected-act2/, summaries/, or plans/book-01/arc-0*.md, unpublished or their git history; do not search for them.
Evaluate with quoted evidence: (1) prose at rest, wit in the events; (2) people say what they mean; (3) distinct voices, old and new; (4) LLM tells at fingerprint rate; (5) Peri: likeable, active, wrong in the productive way; (6) scene endings; (7) sameness of shape; (8) the discoveries as work; (9) anything cryptic or abrupt; (10) is the act building toward something the reader can feel (the reckoning at 111, redacted at 118) or is it a tour of sites.
Then a verdict on its own line: VERDICT: HOLDING / SLIPPING / DEGRADING — with three to six sentences of justification and the two or three most important concrete fixes. Be blunt. Do not edit any file.
I'll start by reading the standard.

(1) Prose at rest; wit in the events. Holds, and 95–96 are the best rest-register work since 06. The redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose
(2) People say what they mean. Much better than act two. Marsh's terms, Edwin's sixpence speech, redacted' four-word ledger entry followed immediately by the full account of why, redacted's "It's not evidence... I'd rather you had a thing that isn't evidence than didn't have it" — every reason is on the page in the speech that needs it. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted's own letter dislodged Edwin, and nobody says it. That is exactly the act-two register, and it sits in the run's most important new relationship.
(3) Voices. The new adults are genuinely differentiated at sentence level, not just habit. Marsh: no contractions, imperatives, long formal periods ending on a self-audit ("I did not know that until this morning, and I have been a lord for twenty-two years"). redacted: one nineteen-clause self-introducing paragraph, wry, arriving at "because I had not believed him" — the most distinct new voice in the book. Old redacted: flat, no rise or fall, one correction ("Twenty-fifth"). redacted: writes instead of speaking, and his one non-verbal act (underlining the name) is his characterisation. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Two problems: redacted shares redacted's clipped-declarative grammar — "Good.", "Twenty-eight days.", "Yes. In my name." is redacted's shape with a different trade behind it, and the warning about redacted has recurred; and redacted speaks in the elliptical fragments the act-two verdict named** ("In days. You wrote in days.").
(4) LLM tells at fingerprint rate. Em dashes: zero in body text. Negative parallelism: 4 instances in 13.4k, all in dialogue and character-earned. The measurable regression is the **negative/withholding verb: "and did not [verb]" runs 1.5/1k vs 0.7 in the exemplars, and with "said nothing" / "did not say anything" the withholding cluster is 2.3/1k against roughly 1.1 in 01–19. redacted sentence: unpublished prose Appositive , which runs 2.8/1k and is the only modifier shape in use.
(5) Peri. Likeable, active, productively wrong. She draws the map nobody asked for; puts her bare hand on both faces unprompted ("It's not cold. redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose Beginnings isn't beginners. Middle column." She catches herself wanting it. That is the engine working.
redacted sentence: unpublished prose The binding list says no more than one in three. 97/98/100 are three in four scenes, and 100's four-word closer is the flattest possible version of it.

(8) The discoveries as work. This is the run's strength and it is not a tour of sites. The made road is read through a staff that stops sinking; the level is read as "ruled like a page"; redacted face is read by redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted sentence: unpublished prose The silence holds absolutely — the nine sentences say "I don't know" four ways, "nobody knows" goes into the works ledger over Edwin's name, and every gesture toward agency is filed in Peri's middle column unexplained.
(9) 'Because'. It did not fall. 90–100 averages 4.8 per thousand words against 5.0 for 60–89 — statistically flat, and the four scenes without their lenses applied (97–100: 7, 7, 8, 8 instances) are among the run's highest. It remains the most audible mechanism, and it is now doing the same job in every mouth: redacted, Edwin, Marsh, redacted, redacted and the gatekeeper all attach their reason with the same conjunction.
(10) Is the act building? Yes, and it is legible. The four-mile test says no a third time and redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose redacted's registers and redacted's book is already in days; 100 ends with the un-openable sending-book, which is a held thread with a date on it. Edwin's spine is not a tour either: he sets terms (sixpence), writes a page designed to disappoint, and tells the only lie of his year to protect a clerk. redacted sentence: unpublished prose
VERDICT: HOLDING
The register survived the transition into act three and the new adults arrived without collapsing into one another; Marsh, redacted and redacted each have a grammar, the discoveries are all work seen from inside, redacted keeps its silence in every mouth including the lord's, and Edwin-as-recorder is generating scenes rather than watching them. But two of the five prior warnings have now failed to move and a third has recurred: because is flat at ~5 per thousand and is every character's only way of attaching a reason; the writing-it-down motif has broken its own budget at five endings in eleven with three of them in the last four scenes; and the clipped-declarative grammar that was redacted's problem is now redacted', while redacted speaks the elliptical fragments the act-two verdict was written about. None of this is degradation, but the run's sentences are converging on one shape — subject, verb, timestamp, trailer, because, and a closing withheld reaction — and convergence is how the previous draft failed.
Three fixes, in order: (a) rewrite the endings of 98 and 100 off the page rather than onto it — "Peri wrote that down." is the weakest sentence in the run and it closes the run; (b) run a because pass over 97–100 specifically, converting at least half to the reason stated as its own sentence, and give at least two characters a different way of attaching a reason so the conjunction stops being the house's single joint; (c) move redacted redacted sentence: unpublished prose
