A quiet day given over to the world’s material history and to a hard limit on what farm magic is allowed to do.
This day’s five commits were careful reasoning about the setting rather than the story. One piece was a development timeline running from the beginning of the world’s magical tradition up to the story’s present day, covering agriculture, paper, and the other ordinary materials a reader takes for granted, because a setting with magic in it drifts anachronistically modern unless somebody works out when each of its everyday things arrived.
The second piece was a ceiling. Farm magic in this world had already been established as something like a green revolution, letting ordinary people multiply yields and speed up work they could already do by hand. Left unbounded, that kind of power gets out of control quickly. The limit settled on was that ordinary farm magic can’t do anything a person couldn’t already do themselves, only faster or more reliably. Above that sits a much rarer tier of mages who can work magic across a whole field at once rather than one task at a time. Their numbers were worked out against the setting’s population density so that the figures hold together across the whole map rather than only in the parish the story happens in.
None of this appears on the page directly. It is background canon: the prose can now be specific without contradicting itself three chapters later. Most of the day’s output is files a reader will never see.
